So i want to put an echo on a part of one of my bands songs. I only want it on one section so I can't use a pluggin. I tried highlighting the area and using audiosuite to process the effect like i do with other things but when i go to preview the effect, nothing comes out. If i process the effect, it totally wipes out the audio that is recorded there. The waves will basically disappear. I would like to put an echo on that i can actually select the how often it delays based on tempo and one that gradually fades out.

Select part of track you want the delay
Create a new track
Paste selection there
Apply plug-ins

Put your plugin on the track.
Ctrl-opt-cmd (Mac, I don't know what it is for PC) click on "bypass" on the plugin, select "Enable Automation for Master Bypass".
On the left, where it says waveform, click on it, select (whatever plug-in) -> Bypass.
Draw in automation so the plug-in is bypassed when you don't want to hear it and not bypassed when you do.
Bam.

Automation does work too, but it doesn't work in all situations. A song I made last summer, the last word of the verse I wanted to ping pong echo back and forth across the stereo field. If I used the delay as a track insert, I couldn't get it to stereo back and forth, I had to use it as a Send Effect. Unfortunately, I couldn't automate the amount of send I could send to the track, and even by turning off all the settings through automation, it still did weird things to the vocal track. So I just cut and pasted that one word to a seperate track, and ran the delay on a send to that.

In theory, all of the things you said you couldn't do are possible.
Actually, in theory, the way I suggested above is a terrible way to do it on LE because then you'll add unnecessary latency to your entire vocal track. Oops.
You can definitely automate the send amount to your aux track with a delay on it. I'd do that.

yeah, thats what I had to do...it wont give me the automation feature with these delays for some reason or else I wouldve done that. i made a separate track and used the ping pong...though i have no clue what that means, after tweaking with the setting, it gave me what i was looking for....btw, im running mac :)

you can use a pluggin. Never use the audio suite cuz its sort of destructive.
-Copy the track
-Create a bus.
-Route the copied track to the bus
-Plug the effect in the Bus
-Set the Bus volume to - infinity
-Use automation Gain on the Bus to bring the volume up during the effected part.
-Use automation Gain on the Bus to Bring the volume down
