i've wanted to know for a while now how bassists set their cabs for venues. i know that some bassists have a kick drum Mic to put in front of one of the speakers but when i see some bands they have no mics in front of the cab. what exactly are they doing there? do they have a mic in the back if the cab were to be open? this has been bugging me for a while

Kick drum pedal...?

Most small live shows the bassist will be DI'd without being mic'd.

I think maybe he meant the kick drum mic, but no matter.

If the cab is ported in the back, I have seen a couple guys mic the port, but it sounded poopy to me. Most bassists just DI because, unless it's a very important and prominent tone, the sound guy will probably throw it toward the back of the mix anyways.

Most of the time the bass is DI'd so no mics needed.

^^?

Anyways, depending on my mood I'll use the DI on my head and use the cab as a monitor or I'll use my SM57 and mic it. Both sound fine. Just make sure you understand how to properly mic a speaker in a live context, otherwise you'll get a lot of unwanted noise. Room ambiance is cool when recording, but live... not so much.

i.e. place it close and off axis, NOT right in the middle of the cone. That's not how speakers work and it will sound thin have too much treble. Play around with the placement during soundcheck, and have someone else play while you stand where the audience will be. The sound in the monitors is NOT what the audience will hear.

for smaller venues, i don't use a pa, just my rig (2x12 + 4x10)

for bigger venues, i go DI into the PA.
