Open-Source music web site?

Just for fun, a buddy and I were thinking of putting together a web site for "open source" music collaboration.

Basically it would be like a file library where people can upload and download raw tracks to jam along to, work with, etc. Projects would develop like a Wiki (where you can backtrack to see what the previous edits were) or with "trees" (where you can see how things branch off). I guess people would have user profiles, etc, and the most popular contributions or most frequent collaborators could have like a "top 10."

Does anyone think something like this would be fun to contribute to or participate in? There are a few sites like this already existing, but none of them are all that great.

I'd be curious to see other sites like this.

I forsee too many problems with copyrights for this to be effective.

i'd imagine you'd have to sign a user agreement relating to the copyrights of the works when you register.

There are too many loopholes in copyright laws and liability waivers don't do much more than scare people into thinking they wont win if they sue. I'm still curious nonetheless.

I think there's already a site like this I don't remember what it's called but I know Fl has collab and I think protools has a sub forum thread that does this but with the whole Copyright "laws" and people being immature probably wouldn't make it last to long and suck the fun right out of it... like 4 people work on the song 1 guy gets jealous and claims rights to it and will try to sue everyone else saying they stole it from him... Oh and flaming can't forget about flaming "urs gutar playng sux" "oh you went C3 F4 your stealing Wootens solo"... More or less just asking some people to collab and cutting out the middle man might be easier(or not)...
