duh any operating system can use it. the most popularp layers (unless wmp and itunes have updated without me knowing) can't play it. i mean its simple enough just saying you are a hippy

christsimpson
01-10-2009, 12:59 PM
uh wmp and itunes can't play free open standard formats? then don't use those players. if they only play proprietary formats, they are dangerous to the end user and inherently bad. and stupid.

christsimpson

because Youtube is ogg-hostile. they won't make high-quality versions of ogg uploads, and the standard versions are raped, i.e. unwatchable.

Google video has big upload capabilities. I'm really curious as to what this actually is so just upload it. People won't negatively judge you just because youtube throttles the video quality. Who cares. Also, youtube's max upload is 1gb.

iTunes and Quicktime are two of few proprietary players that haven't bothered adopting free and even standard file formats such as ogg. as a Free Software Foundation member I pretty much have to propose that you use our suggested media player - VLC. VideoLan Client is a cross-platform media player that plays .ogg format files as well as almost everything else.

maybe i :smoke: too much but...

i think it's pretty funny you are in free software foundation... how did you get so involved in the "free software" underworld? i like to think of all the supporters of free software live in a hi tech cave, much like the people in matrix 3.

christsimpson

I'm a geek as well as an anarchist. how can I not be in the Free Software Foundation?

I see free software as essential. the end user *deserves* to know what is running on his computer. this it cannot when running proprietary software, because no one knows the underlying source code - apart from the makers. consequently this software is dangerous. it might be badly written or full of viruses. it might send information about the user and its habits when connected to the Internet... it might a lot of things you wouldn't want it to do.

this isn't a scenario valid with free software projects, because the source code is *free*. thus anyone can check it. and many will - to guarantee that this code isn't harming anyone.

also to look on the practical side of free software - development is speedier, because you will essentially (often) have maaaaaaaaany people working - preferably on different things - at all times. like the GNU/Linux operating system family. there are hundreds of thousands, millions even, working on something related to GNU/Linux software. whether it's the system kernel, a media player, an image manipulator or an IRC-client.

another thing that's bad with proprietary software is the incompatibility. the developers behind proprietary software always want to enforce their own solutions. thus they will not support exporting a file and working with it in another program, developed by a rivalling company.

proprietary software developers also have a habit of sucking arse when it comes to support. not only is the support often expensive and really bad, but they also tend to cut it whenever a newer version of their application is released - effectively *forcing* everyone to use the newest version of it, and thus *forcing* everyone into BUYING the newest version - simply because they can't use the newest version together with the older one (because of incompatibility), and the lack of support.

I could go on for ages, but to sum it up real quick, with free software you have,
1. the newest of the newest software at all times available.
2. many people working at the same time.
3. a guarantee that the software you are running isn't going to harm you as a person, nor your computers software or hardware.
4. (this is the important one:) CONTROL. you know what's going on. you own your software. it doesn't own you. you aren't forced to do this and that. and you are free to collaborate with anyone, or change the software to fit *your* needs. the software is *yours*.

free software, free society!

it's a game. a GLORIOUS game. he said with a straight face. also I don't think I care anymore if anyone checks it out. this thread delivered anyway. also I'm too busy playing Call of Duty: World at War, and saving up for skate. 2 (which is for the PS3, and I don't have any means neccessary to pirate it as I have done with CoD5) too actually hack this game. it has some bugs still. and it's not a full game yet.
