Well, this is what i have to work with:
- Yamaha DTXplorer electronic drumset (with MIDI OUT port)
- M-Audio Midisport UNO MIDI to USB cable
- Dell Inspiron E1505 laptop
- Tracktion2 recording software with RMIV plugin

I want to be able to play the drums and have them record into tracktion as midi notes, which would use the drum sample sounds from the RMIV plugin. And then i could edit the midi notes and what not.

Is this possible, or did i think this whole thing wrong? I can't seem to get it to work, and im kind of new to MIDI, so im not exactly sure what im doing wrong. Thanks, Jake

That should do it for you just fine. What are you doing right now that's not working?

I have the Midisport Uno going from the Midi Out port of the drum set, then its plugged in to my laptop with the Usb end. Then i have RMIV open as a plugin in Tracktion 2, I have the Uno's Midi In set as the input device, enabled and everything. It just won't read any incoming midi signals.

I also tried doing the same thing with my Casio Wk3700 keyboard with the midi-to-usb connection into Tracktion2 with Sampletank for the sound samples, and that won't work either

It sounds like you've got your hardware set-up right. I'd snoop around in whatever MIDI preferences/options menus there are in Tracktion and see what's there. Make sure you're trying to recieve MIDI data on Channel 1.

do you have the drivers installed?

the drivers installed perfectly. i have the midisport uno set as the midi input, to channel 1. i then have RMIV set with all the channels as channel 1. there are 18 pads in RMIV, one for each drum/cymbal, etc. my drumset has 8-9 pads, so i assume i would have to assign each physical drum pad to a different pad in RMIV. it has each pad in RMIV listed under triggers as B0, C1, C#1, etc. im not sure if i need to set those as the corresponding physical drum pads from my kit.

im sorry if i dont make any sense, im just really confused. the only bit ive worked with midi before has been inputting the notes in the midi editor one at a time, so im new with recording midi with external gear.

i have the Midisport UNO set as the input device on track number 1 in Tracktion2. there is a input level meter, but its not showing any movement when i play a drum on my electronic kit. however, when i play a note on the computer in the midi editor, the note registers and the meter moves.

it has to be something going from the drumset to the computer, but i cant imagine what. i think everything is hooked up right. the midisport uno's usb end is plugged into my laptop, and then there are two midi connectors, labeled "To Midi Out" and "To Midi In". I assume "To Midi Out" goes to the "Midi Out" port on the electronic drumset's sound module. Thats how i have it hooked up, and the green LED light on the midisport uno for "Midi In" lights up.

There is only a "Midi Out" port on the drumset's sound module, but that is what i would use, correct? I think "Midi In" would be if i want the midi data to go from the computer-to-the drumset. I only want the midi data to go from the drumset to the computer, which will then go into Tracktion2, and will trigger the audio files for the drums in the RMIV plugin. This is possible, right?
