Sometimes I really enjoy reading these forums and the discussions that take place. The potential for the transfer of ideas between all of the members here really is amazing. I am trying to spend less time getting in between those discussions as they can be helpful to those involved for educational purposes.

i like bridge to solace. i try to contribute positively to this form amongst all the pinhead intellectuals and convenient ideologues (:p), but its rough sometimes. i'm not one of extended higher education or particularly well read as many here are, but my ideas and thoughts are my own and thats good enough for me, if not for some others. i try to post respectfully and with regard for the opinions of others in this forum
i don't understand the whole "people from other forums" ruining this forum attitude of some posters here. its not supposed to be a little club, its supposed to be for everyone so far as i understand forums to work. most people have their own style of posting and way of saying things and thinking i would hope. and we should be free to express those things openly and without hindrance or ridicule. or expected to post to the "quality" (lol) of some others here
there is room for everyone is how i think about most things. because that means there is room for me and you, too :)
if someone thinks otherwise they are free to keep posting here and help make the place what they think it should be

VF brought you Dinosaurs, Clothing is a Sin, A Revelation in Philosophy, among many other great works. He is by far the most underrated of all time. I admit I haven't been doing as well lately but it was mainly the drugs and the vagrant life I lead which brought me to this low state. But I am on the path to recovery and I am getting better everyday. And there is no doubt that I will be my old self again, one day.
See the beginning of my work was fueled by a youthful view on world matters, one part ignorance, two parts genius, coming together to provide a unique, maybe even flawed, perception of things. But it provided, always, for a different perspective and a mind-opening experience.
My ideas were groundbreaking and unprecedented, driven by a desire, a lust of knowledge, a yen for discovery that still, to this day, has not been quenched.
I continue asking tough questions on the pertinent issues of our time, going where no man dares to go.
I am a blessing to this community and a great asset. There is only 1 VF, and he has blessed you now with his presence. Do not take this opportunity for granted. I have a limited time here on this earth, so enjoy the time you do have to spend with me, because I could be taken out at any minute.

It not because you're a conservative christian, it's because you tackle issues in crazy ways. Instead of saying, for example, "I think that the media is becoming amoral and there's too much positive reinforcement of sexual promiscuity", you'd say "Fox is evil and sex should be banned on tv."

Well I don't think sex should be banned on tv, but I think it should be taken out of the primetime lineup. for instance, it is pretty sick when you're growing up and you want to watch a wholesome family show on ABC, (like the ones that used to come on), and now all you can find is Desperate Housewives and Grey's Anatomy.

Colorless green ideas sleep furiously.
Actually I'm not all that into Chomsky. Manufacturing Consent is an important book but he gets so much criticism that I'm hesitant about reading his stuff. Though Failed States looks interesting.
While his criticisms of the state are admirable (and often fairly correct), his economics are terrible and it seems like he has more of a problem with free markets than he does statist power.

And?
Well, he is a libertarian socialist. To him unrestrained markets are just as bad as authoritarian states.
Well, unfortunately he fails to see the own contradictions in his assertions and positions. He wants a stronger centralized government now, then to be abolished later. He sounds an awful lot like Marx in that respect. Get rid of capitalism and the state will follow.
Because you know, when the government is locking up a significant portion of the population waging the war on drugs, bombing and shooting people in Iraq and other countries, and will shoot or arrest you if you refuse to pay it's taxes, it’s just obvious that the real problem are those sons of bitches Bill Gates and Warren Buffet! All that nasty stuff the government is doing is their fault anyway, and once capitalism is abolished the state will wither away. I mean, that's what happened in all those communist countries, right?

Actually that is precisely what happens. When government is nowhere to be found, people create voluntary associations for protection, because it is to their benefit.
It isn't uncommon in neighborhoods that are neglected by the cops for people to form their own forms of protection.
And not the other color so police think they have the authority to kill a minority.

Except they don't coercively tax (well, not always anyhow). The primary difference between the state and such entities are that one doesn't have a coercive monopoly on force and is voluntary.

And the government deals in all kinds of coercion.I don't think you see what I meant, which is that private organizations will seek to maximize their own power at the expense of others. This leads to conflict and eventually the establishment of a monopoly on the use force - that is, a state. The government is hardly the only entity capable of coercion.

No, I know what you mean. I'm rejecting that an monopoly will inevitibly arise. As in economics, monopolies do not tend to arise in the free market. That is, the market that does not prohibit competition from arising. If a protection agency were to start abusing it's power in a free market society, competition would inevitably rise to meet it. Obviously, in a free market society, a monopoly could only exist by consent of it's consumers.
No one said the government is the only entity capable of coercion, but has historically been the number one perpetrator of it.

Bad governments have been.
Actually, when you think about it, for most of history we've had monarchies, which tend to be pretty damned coercive, and they are run by an individual.
But in any case government isn't economics and the same axioms don't necessarily apply. When businesses compete for market share, they generally play fair with some exceptions. When non-state entites compete for territory, they use violence.

All governments have done this. It is in the nature of the state to use it's coercive monopoly.
And protection and defense are services that are subject to the same things any other service is in an economy.
