Psychiatry and involuntary commitment, mental health calls, et cetera

Well I have been a psych patient for over 5 years now. But last night I experienced something that was quite disturbing, more so than anything I've seen in my years dealing with psychiatry and mental health.

Last night about 12:30 I had been drinking for several hours and I called a friend to see if he would come pick me up so we could hang out while I was sobering up. Unfortunately though, the phone disconnected, giving a busy signal for 30 minutes as we tried to call each other. He was afraid I was going to harm myself or that I had passed out when the phone disconnected. So I went along my business, taking a bath, having another drink, completely oblivious to what was going on outside.

Later, after maybe 30 minutes (about 1 am) I got a knock on my door. They said it was the fire department and that they wanted to see if I was alright. I opened the door, when 4 police and 3 EMTs rushed in, checking my blood pressure, heart rate, oxygen levels, searching my apartment for drugs, and interrogating me for 15 minutes. I was eventually rushed to the hospital where my friend met me. It was determined that I was not a threat, but that I had just had too much to drink and it was said that I should drink in moderation.

Needless to say I am pretty upset with my friend jumping to conclusions like that.

The outcome of this situation could have been a lot worse. But luckily I was released after receiving an IV and being questioned for easily 30 minutes.

Now I would like this thread to address the constitutionality of mental health calls to the police, involuntary admission to the ER, and in general what the laws are regarding psych patients across the country, including ECT provisions in individual state statutes and the general view of the average citizen on psychiatry.

i believe "professionals" and law enforcement have an obligation to intercede in such circumstances. if not they can prolly be sued. its part of the job not just to protect the public, but oft times protect the individual from themselves. even if not really morally obligated, legally it makes sense. just people doing their jobs. their job, or part of it, is to help other people with medical needs. its thought to be a good thing

don't drink so much and maybe get some new friends and this won't happen so much

To clarify, I was on the phone with my friend calling him to hang out. The connection was disconnected and he just assumed that I had passed out or that I had hurt myself. I tried calling him back multiple times but there was always a busy signal when I picked up. He ultimately called the police and had me taken to the hospital for no ****ing reason at all.

Look I give the cops credit. They didn't even charge me with a crime!!!! Or ask me who got the alcohol!! So I guess I got the last laugh. But still, my damn phone disconnected and my friend thought I had passed out or something so he called 911. I want to beat the ****ing **** out of that prick but I'd just be in more trouble.

(They didn't even look in the fridge and see all the beer i had!!!)

My girlfriend had called me while walking back from getting some groceries down the street. All of a sudden I heard a loud bang followed by about 10 seconds of static and finally the phone went dead. Well, I was terrified she had been hit by a car, so in the pouring rain I bicycled as fast as I could to the intersection she told me she had been. Thank Jah, she was alright and the phone had been frazzeled by a security device at Shopper's.
Anyways, good thing you didnt have a bag of weed or some illegal guns hangin' around the house, haha.

But if you've been deemed a mental health case in the past, intervention is probably considered a possible threat to yourself and others (key part really) if you're in an altered state of mind.
