I'm a complete noob when it comes to recording gear
I need a seperate recording device where I can first record a track on to, like guitar. And then listen to that track while recording a new track. (Or record two tracks at the same time)

And then I'd like to be able to transfer those tracks over to my computer, preferably* seperately for mixing later on

Recommend me something!.. And preferably not too expensive (obviously ;))

*but if that's considerably more expensive i can live without it

Most of the stand-alone recorders will do what you need nowadays. The real question is price range.

The one I've generally found to be intriguing (never used it: I'm 100% computer-based) is the Fostex MR-8HD, which you can get with or without a CD-burner. This is largely because it has an internal hard disk drive, rather than a flash card, and because it features 4 simultaneous mic inputs with phantom power (most recorders feature two, and many don't have mic preamps on all channels).

Definitely make sure you pick something up with an internal hard disk drive, because flash cards tend to be much smaller than you might expect once you start playing around with more advanced recording techniques (multiple mics, virtual tracks, etc).

The Fostex MR-8HD looks perfect. Thanks
Reasonably priced too. although a bit outside of my price range... But hey, what isn't

You could do it cheaper if you bought something that just recorded the tracks directly to your computer a la

It'll do all the same stuff for you, you're just not paying for a CD burner and a hard drive and stuff that you already have in your computer anyways.

Just a thought.

Oh I know, but i specifically asked for a seperate device because I will be using it at places where I don't have access to a computer

that fostex mr8 box is pretty awesome. i had the smaller one with the flashcard and only two inputs and no phantom power and it was still pretty cool. i started just doing basic acoustic stuff and as i progressed i got into recording a full band, but then i went with the cubase.

for a beginner, its a great box. i mean, in a pinch, u can find the fostex mr8 for cheap on the bay, and just pickup an art mp tube studio and thatll get you by. but thats for like, acoustic singer/songwriter kinda stuff.
