MGS4 was an utter ballache. the storyline was somewhere in between donnie darko and the matrix on the pretension scale, and the vile creation that was MGO was the biggest waste of my life thus far

Yeah Fallout 3 does suck if you have the attention span of a 6 year old. Go back to L4D if you want to continually be shooting at something.

Yeah you're right I mean it happened to get at least 9/10 across the board with all major reviewers but that doesn't mean anything cause you think it's not a well made game.

Thats not proof that its a good game at all. Most of that high score is most likely carried over from it's amazing past games.
There are several major problems with the game that make it an extremely forgettable gaming experience. Here are some of my major complaints with the game:
-The VATS system is retarded. THE overdone "slow time down" game mechanic has been used too many times in videogames in general.
- Its not an RPG, which its supposed to be. Its a action game pretty much. This deviates from the whole point of fallout.
-The interface is TERRIBLE.
- Skills should actually mean something and define the character. They really don't do that very much in this game, unlike the past fallout releases. The skills are waaaaaaaaaaaaaay played down in this game. The skills should define the character more than the player.
- They took out a lot of the "darker" stuff, like drug addiction. This takes away from the game's gritty atmosphere.
- Companions (NPC's) are mere helpers in combat, not well developed personalities which are interesting. They're just there to shoot at stuff, and little else.
- Skill based mini games? Are you serious?
- For a beautiful looking game, the environments weren't well thought out at all and were mostly boring
- MAKE MISSIONS INTERESTING. "Go here and kill that" or "Go there and talk to this guy" missions are ****ing boring. This isn't WoW.
-The game overall is just too easy. I never really felt challenged or in any real danger when playing it. This is because they had to lower the bar to appeal to "most people"

Mr. Ron makes some valid points. I was pretty disappointed when I played Fallout 3. It was okay but nothing like the hype had made me anticipate.

That's how I feel about GTA yet everyone and their mother scream out the door over those horrible games. Easily the most repetitive game ever.
I think that FO3 is an acquired taste cause it took me a while and then I totally got hooked.
JizzInMyPants
12-28-2008, 12:43 AM
it is a fps game, fps games consist of nothing but go here and do that, unless its a game based on physics like portal which it isn't....
well... even portal was a "get there" game....

GTA actually poses a challenge a lot of the time though and actually has a nice set up for its missions. Fallout 3 was just uber repetitive.

Maybe. I dont know what it is about FO3 but I just love seeing whats over the next hill and what going to come running at me. I love the landscape and environment. I do think that a lot of its features are poorly done though. Like it was mentioned the skills are kind of pointless it seems and VATS is only good for watching brain particles bounce around (which to me, never gets old). Seem like unarmed would be impossible in the game and there isnt even enough big gun ammo in the game to even consider going big guns. I think it definitely could use some more work but something about it captivated me.

Exactly. FO3 seems to revolve around the setting and environment much more than the gameplay. It's extremely open ended and you can do almost whatever you want, so I don't see how it isn't an RPG. VATS makes many battles a little easy, I will admit that, but it's always awesome to chose what limb you wanna blow off a super mutant or what have you. The skills actually do matter, because your proficiency in speech, science, lockpick, etc., can totally change certain interaction with players and the world, not to mention all the special abilities which can also change interactions.
The setting is the most important part of the game. Bethesda did a great job in combing the ruins of Earth which are seemingly forever stuck in the 1950s with the "futuristic" world of the Vaults all into one in the Wastelands. I think a huge part of the game is to just wander around and look at stuff, as boring as that may sound. It doesn't completely revolve around leveling up or stats or killing bosses or whatever.
Just because the game doesn't play like someone wanted it to or it wasn't what they expected doesn't make it a bad game. It got great reviews across the board for a reason. There is a huge difference between not liking a game and a game simply being bad, and you can't completely discredit an obviously well thought out and made game because "you didn't like it."
Mr. Ron

it has some strong points but it just doesn't deserve the scores it got. I just think it deviates waaaaay too much from the original story.

I'd venture to say its because there's a type of person that actually enjoys games like GTA4 that keeps buying them that makes them so popular.

Fallout 3. Mr. Ron - you liked STALKER, right? I thought you'd at least have the attention for this....
And drug addictions ARE in the game, and I'd say there's a lot more darker stuff than that (like meeting the dude who ate his parents and setting off nuclear bombs in the middle of little towns for money).I dunno where that whole skill based mini-game thing came from, can't say I came across that at all....
sLarkin20
12-29-2008, 11:25 PM
Yeah you can get addicted to the drugs in game, and there are some NPCs with drug addictions. They took stuff out in certain countries, though, like they took out the interaction with the Megaton bomb in Japan, and I think they took out some of the drug stuff in Australia, if that's what he is talking about.
I don't know what skill based mini-games he is talking about, either.

the insanely ridiculous scene that made a game with an unneccesarily precocious storyline descend into an utter farce?
there were some outstanding bits in MGS4, i wont deny that, but the amount of cutscenes is what id expect in a final fantasy game, only the story isnt anywhere near as engaging (and thats a feat)
anything with the phrase 'la lay loo lay lo' being uttered seriously and with genuine concern should be reassessed
JizzInMyPants
01-01-2009, 09:28 PM
story wasnt engaging? that is the best story that engaged me since the golden sun series
the fact that it almost tied up all the loose ends to a 20 yr story is incrudibe
Tillius
01-01-2009, 09:31 PM
Yeah it's very rare that the story to a videogame can get me to the point where I have goosebumps, but this has been done to me by pretty much every MGS game I believe, along with some FF games.
The MGS series has by far the best story of any videogame before it.
JizzInMyPants

dont know how much relief it was to me that this fictional character (snake) will be able to rest and not fight again since he has been fighting for so ****ing long
I thought the MGS4 writing was worse than MGS2. Hideo dug himself too deep of a hole with MGS2 that he couldn't do anything remotely logical to tie it all together.
