Was just wondering if any of you guys use Tama, and what you think of it? I was thinkin about going to get a "Tama - Superstar Hyper-Drive 6 piece". Anyways any feedback would be awesome. Thanks a lot :)

I've never owned one, but they seem to be praised for the most part around here. I thought some people have mentioned on here about not liking their mounting systems, but I may be mistaken.

Yeah the mounting system is generally a bit ugly and awkward.
Ok, generally speaking, i dont like tama kits. Their sound, no matter which line i've tried, always seem so horrible one-dimensional and suited only to certain styles. Its just an opinion but, in my opinion, i would stay clear of them if you foresee more than just rock drumming in your future.

dude, what happened to the Tama hate?
Their top end stuff is REALLY nice these days.
They went through a period a few years back where I believed they focused too heavily on thei lower-intermediate lines but now with the Bubinga series, Tama really has some great stuff.
The hardware has always been decent.

I've heard nothing but bad things about their customer service. Taking over 18 months to ship a single special order drum. Just stuff like that. As for the drums themselves, never played any. Tried out an Iron Cobra kick pedal once, it was alright.

Tama's the shig and everyone knows it. they're just solid, everyone's got their little gripes but i got two words
FRIG THEM
tama dominates their high end kits, their intermediate shig is sol'ski beyond belief and their hardware and Iron Cobras are so swee its like a party in yo pie hole

I got a Tama Rockstar, I think it's a decent kit personally
I've only been drumming for 3 years. I started with a standard CB Drums 5 piece and added a Tama Rockstar to it for the double bass drum setup.
It's good for an intermediate kit. Of course, after a few years I'll trade in for a better kit

Uhhhhhhhhhhhh what?
My Starclassics are perfect in any setting.. except maybe small jazz club kit... They were so perfect for funk, groove, hip hop, and the latin gigs I played.
I played in a hardcore band with them too and with all the shows i played with them, they sounded awesome

I'm with Phil. I've found their sound to be very focused, genre-wise.

I've never been much of a fan of Tama's sound, personally.
I think they'd work well for hiphop or r&b settings, but they're not what I'd look for in a kit.

Tama has some of the ugliest sounding drums I've ever played. The Iron Cobra pedals and hi-hat stands are pretty good.
The low to intermediate kits I've played are always terrible sounding and have awful sizing.
A guy I know play a Starclassic Maple and it is just awful. But he mostly plays along with Dream Theater CD's, so I guess that's the sound he wants. Crap.

i find that most genres generally require very similar sounding drum sounds especially the way things are produced these days
all of those genres you listed would be fine with the generic big cracking snare really low bass drum "rock" sound
jazz is really the only genre where you cant get away with it... i find its mostly a drum size and tuning thing
ive heard jack dejohnnette signature heads on a star classic and it still just sounded like big rock drums
you really need that big open higher pitched sound if you REALLY want to play REAL jazz in a professional setting... generally you will get this with smaller drum sizes

I don't like Tama, speaking as someone who sells drums.
I hear a lot of complaints, especially on the "oh so mighty" iron cobra..
Or as we call it, the DW converter. I get to place lots of parts orders for Tama, and replace things.
Not cool. But at the moment, many once prominant companies are slacking.. Zildjian and Pearl to name a couple others.

I dont mind the hat stands, but im not a fan of iron cobras either. Thats just a preference thing. They feel too heavy and clunky to me.

Well first off thanks a lot for all your feedback. Basically I'm looking for a good kit with a good sound. I'm just getting back into drumming and want to get a good sturdy kit that will produce a nice sound and last me a while.
So I ended up coming across Tama, and figured I'd try to get some good truthful advice that wasn't BS lol. But if you guys got any other names to suggest please do! I was also looking at CB and ddrum. But I was reading around and read CB isn't very good? Anyways again feedback will be greatly appreciated. Thanks :)

CB are about the lowest of the low these days.
For a good all round sound, i'd suggest Sonor or Mapex.

The prejudice and close mindedness in this thread is breath takening.
Personally, I don't think you can say of any brand at all that the high-end stuff sucks. That's just retarded.
That it ain't "your" partical taste, that I can live with... but seriously...
Come and play my starclassic bubinga and tell me that set sucks

The high end Tama stuff is good, but not great.

For a good mid range kit, I suggest Yamaha or Pacific, maybe mapex, I don't have a lot of experience with them though.
Yamaha are probably the best drums for the money at this time.

You can get a great sound out of a cheap kit, I can say that much. They aren't bad, but I definitely wouldn't be using a Tama kit to play jazz...though it would be hilarity. They tend to focus on loud snares, lower end toms...which is great for a lot of genres, and even some unconventional ones assuming you make it work.
Personally, I like individual parts of their kit. I find some of their higher end snares to be pretty nice (though honestly, a yamaha oak custom has me now.) So it's not a terrible investment, but make sure that you try out some other kits as always before purchasing it...might feel a "little" limiting later, if you stick with Tama.

Yes......
This is what I said....... and snare drums tend to have a crack and a low sounding bass tone....................
Also my Starclassics sound sexy, really really great drums.... Although the original starcast mounts I do not care for......

The new starcast's look perfect. They dont take away form the awesome looking drum, like rims and stuff do.

Yeah but looks only like half of it...
I mean if the thing detunes your drums and rattles around.....
The new ones are supposed to be better for that though
^ That was a rumour circulating without any substance behind it. I put it to the test some time ago and the results I obtained showed that the old mounts did not detune the drum by any significant amount.

Obviously you and your mates don't know how to tune. So much for,
Thing is, my drums were really really cheap, and bought used. I just know how to tune very well, and have a very good touch.
If I were you, and think entry level kits sound the best, then just stick with them mate.
Legacy, if you looking for a good sound go with the hyperdrive kits. Other options would include the Sonor 3007's, or the Yammie Stage customs. If you're willing to spend more there are a tonne of other choices.

You're immature. Donati uses Pearl References, am I right? (I'm not actually sure but you may know). They must sound **** then, because you obviously don't like him with whatever he produces.

Yes, you are. You've made it even worse by taking my avatar and poking fun of that. That is just daft mate, grow up. :) It's by a band called The Egg.
Ok so, lets get Gavin Harrison to hit a cheap sounding snare. He's good, so the drum will produce a good sound, of course, why I didn't think of that.
Donati has a great sense of touch, especially dynamically with this feet.

Look i'll throw another edit in... I go to a GREAT music school with one of the top ten jazz faculties in north america, I can play drums very well despite these stupid videos you may have of me (minus the songo.. it's prretty good) especially for the experience I have and for my age thanks, and regardless of stupid personal attack on me, it still proves absouletly nothing nor does it show what you can do on the drums.
Oh, and my tama drums are great, obviously they don't please everyone, I LOVE the drums(just not the old mounts).
