Cotton Candy

[Aflong Aflongkong]

i watched a man make cotton candy
apparently out of thin air at the circus.
there was a spinning wheel
and he poured in a bag of sugar
and then pieces of pink fluff came off the sides,
combing into pink clouds billowing
and finally he stuck a cardboard stick in
and handed me a pink wobbling hugeness.
it wasn't the taste, though i smudged mouth
and cheeks to get every last bit.
it was the process i never forgot.
when they told me at sunday school
god created the world out of nothing
i knew just how he did it.

i used to have a job at the fair
that stuff will stick to you when you sweat
gets in ur hair and shi
