So, time for a new thread. Current set up/gigging set up. I just threw the 12" in now, I've never actually used it before with my band. But I want to add another tom. I tried mounting it off the bass, but it wobbled too much when I hit the bass drum and it just wasn't comfortable (I've been getting too used to no rack toms).
Anyway, I did buy a new snare head and some drum books. I've already played through the brush book, but I didn't have a copy myself so I figured I'd pick it up for reference or if I just wanted to go through it again. Prolly some new cymbals are coming next.

I actually really dig that set-up!
The Art Of Bop Drumming is great, I love it. Go through the brush book again man, you can ALWAYS do it cleaner!

Yea definitely. I sure as hell didn't "master the art of brushes" after one play through. :)

That setup looks like something Travis Orbin would play. Have you been playing trad lately? Looks like your snare is slanted :)

I started playing trad all the time about a year ago. My grip on my left hand was poopty and my wrist was bothering me, so I decided to just start over working on my technique. And since I had Mayer's DVD, I went with trad grip. :)
TBH, my left hand feels much more creative now, but I dunno if that actually has anything to do with switching grips.

Hey whatever works for you, as long as you are thinking on improving your left hand it WILL get better. I have always played a mix of traditional and matched (though mostly matched) and my left hand didn't really start improving until I focused on it and played certain exercises. Also setting up your kit lefty and playing that way for a few months does wonders :)

What kind of level is The Art of Bop Drumming at? It covers a wide variety of stuff right?
I've been contemplating getting it for a long time because of its reputation but I don't actually know that much about it. Would it be useful for me to have? I'm a first year drumset student at uni if that makes a difference.

It's at the awesome level.
Seriously, it's got great information for just about anything.
And the comping exercises are great. Just playing them over and over and making them groove is awesome. They start off easy and end up pretty tough. Great independence builders.
There's a lot of stuff about accompanying soloists and constructing your own solos, too.
It's totally worth it just to build up your vocabulary and different ideas.
Beyond Bop Drumming is a great book, too, but it's intense. The stuff in there is so nuts. Get it if you like a challenge.
