View Full Version : VIDEO LESSON: Tony Williams Lick

Another simple lick, this one made popular by the late Tony Williams. I found it in a book I have about Dennis Chambers, called Serious Moves. It'd be cool to see other people try it and maybe share with us more applications.

Cool stuff, man. I actually stumbled upon this lick myself while experimenting with Bonham triplets...didn't realize that it was attributed to Tony. I also like to play these with the bassdrum on the downbeat (Bass, tom, tom, etc).

I'll have to try and apply it to a 4 piece... well done Jez.

Cool as a lick but I didn't really like it as a fill. It just sounds spazzy the way it goes from groove to "contaminate the air with notes."
Would make a nice embellishment at the end of a fill with more space in it imo.

Yeah I agree, but I imagine Tony would have played it during one of his really spacy solos anyway, with his epic tom melodies and whatnot.
As I said, it'd be cool to hear other people try the lick and see what they come up with. Thanks for watching guys :)

Jezen got banned?
Re: Thread - That was pretty cool. As soon as my exams end, I'm going to practice that :).
I don't know why, bot Bonham Triplets throw me off.

Awesome video. I really like that lick. Tony had some great fills.

Cool stuff. I'm not really a drummer(although I'd like to be), but I enjoy watching what others do in order to see how I can apply it to my instruments of choice.

Not to mention Tony Williams is one of my favorite drummers anyway.
