Don't know if you guys have heard about this or not, but I just found out about it recently. Every day, http://www.musiciansfriend.com puts up a new piece of equipment were they have a sale for a ridiculously low price just for that day. It's pretty awesome.

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/stupid

Anyway..today's deal is on a MXL 2010 condenser mic. What I'm looking for at the moment is a really amazing mic with a decently low price that can be used solely for recording really bright high quality acoustic recordings. I don't care if the mic is horrible for overheads or vocals or anything else, just need a really amazing acoustic sound. I recently bought an audio-technica at2020 for this purpose, and though it does much better than my sm57 (lol) it still just sounds average.

How would this mic do? For that price I could buy two of them and plug em both into my firepod. Anybody have any experience with this mic?

really amazing mic with a decently low price

why is this what people always want (sorry, gonna go on the stump here)....there's a reason why things are expensive, in most cases, its because its good. Cheap things are that way because they're generally not as good. So why do people always expect things that are good but cheap? I mean, yeah, they do exist, but does anybody realize why things are priced the way they are?

Anyway....

if you want something bright and brittle, the MXL should do just fine.

Yeah totally understand this, but if I had the money i would've bought an at-4050 and not had to post this thread or look at the stupid deal of the day haha just as with guitars or any other instrument, there are plenty of cheaper options that are better than the high-priced alternatives.

edit: http://www.myspace.com/thelightseason the song 'where we stand' is the acoustic sound i'm going for. really bright and high quality sounding

Price is a placebo often. I don't think human ears can detect the difference between an intermediate mic and pro mic in most cases. Thanks for the heads up Mo Mo.

It sounds like you're trying to buy your way out of bad results, but don't have the money to do it. If you "recently" bought the AT-2020, I'd suggest you stop looking around for awhile and try to maximize the good that can be done with that mic first. For starters, don't place the mic according to any formulas: slap on some headphones, and move it around while you play until you've found the best sound you can get. If it's still not quite "it" then maybe try some EQ and other effects to get what you want.

Remember that every aspect of recording is filtering. The mic is a filter. The room is a filter. The placement of the mic in the room is a filter. The guitar matters, the strings matter, the pick matters, and this is to say nothing of person holding the pick to strike the strings of the guitar being captured in the room by the microphone. There's a lot of variables to consider. Make sure you've exhausted them all before you spend money you don't seem to have.

Regarding the deal of the day, I've followed it for about 1-2 years, and I would say that generally only for about 1 in every 15 DoD's will Musician's Friend actually offer something at an excellent price. In that 1 of 15, only about half will be something that isn't just them offloading junk that nobody wanted to buy. In that half, there's a fairly small percentage that it will be directly applicable to your needs at the time of the sale. I have no prior experience with the current mic for sale. I do know that MXL gets plenty of mixed reviews on the whole, and also that I'm a big fan of the MXL 990 (I have 4 and they've been a mainstay of my mic locker for a long time). However, I really couldn't make a comfortable recommendation of the particular mic on sale today at all.

i like that the mxl 2010 has omni and figure-8 patterns. thats a huge plus. im a guitarist primarily, recording is kind of my second love. if i had to spend $1,000 on a guitar or amp for my band, i would in a heart beat. HOWEVER since im not a great engineer (this is jsut a hobby) i think mediocre mics (around 1-200) are great for me, bc im not making recordings worthy of an at4050, so i went at2020.

personally i disagree with comptonrob, i think the at2020 sounds very good. maybe not very, but it sounds MUCH better than sm57s and 58s. well worth the money i spent on it. the Musicians Friend Stupid Deal of the Day gives people like us with not a lot of cash flow to save a couple bucks here and there on some stuff we might normally not pick up.

if you are choosing between 3 diff omni mics (like i am) having one of them be $20 cheaper than its starting price is a huge plus. we just want to know if these mics are worth it.

On a side note to that bit, and as a little recommendation for all you guys just getting started, check out my mic and mic techniques thread in the Jam Session, just search for it. Probably be able to find a few good starting points in there at least.

It's always a hit or miss with that... I've seen things go on there and within an hour be sold out I've seen the same thing on there multiple times, then they every so often throw up there accessories/apparel but usually it's junk that never sells like there was another mic on there the other day and I was thinking about buying it until I read the reviews and everyone said basically after the first drop your better off not picking it up again... but it doesn't hurt to have it bookmarked...

I know it's getting redundant, but today's is the CAD M177 Cardioid Condenser Microphone and i looked up some harmony central reviews and all of them love it. Any experience with it?

you GHETTO BOB!!!

read the gearslutz.com link. theres at least 4 kids raving about these mics. some kids say they got 2 or 4 of em! kids are saying its better than the AT3035, which is the step up from the 2020 (what we got) and at less than half the price!

the only downside i see is that a few months ago they were going for like, $30. if you want to roll the dice and wait for the price to drop, it prob will. im thinking i might buy one tom morning when i wake up like asap.

i have to admit, the stupid deal of the day is awful on my wallet, me and my impulse shopping, but how can i say no.

i was looking at the heils bc the Heil PR40 is ****ing amazing, and i was looking to buy one of those retro mics for a photo-shoot, so i was gonna buy it but chose not to.

i DID however buy two CAD M177s, two ArtMP Tube Studio Preamps, im returning my at2020 for a Sterling Audio ST55 or just cash, or credit towards a lexicon mx200 bc i need a good reverb.

when u get yours and record something let me know what you thought of it.
