So about 6 months ago I left my hardcore band. I was sick of all teh drama and the music, I felt, was not up to what I considered to be my level. The singer was terrible as was the drummer.

So months later I got in touch with the bassist and decided we want to write different styles of music, so we started to jam. We both want to write circa survive, mars volta, fall of troy style music, but can't seem to get the idea. We seem to be bouncing off the lame ideas off each other and none seem to work or sound good. I have never been in this situation of not being able to get halfway decent songs... What are we doing wrong? www.myspace.com/cjmakesmusic

Listen to that to hear the first song we came up with. Not as "progressive" or "experimental" as I want to be, but thats all we can really come up with. I haven't jammed with the drummer I have lined up because I feel like it would be a waste of time cause we don't even have any ideas for songs yet. Should we just jam more? Nothing ever sounds good... Please help. :)

Always keep playing together. Even if it's just kind of noise at this point, you're learning how to musically read each other.

For song ideas: The easiest way to get inspired is to get angry. Find somthing that annoys you. Write down a dozen or two statements about it. Look at those statements and see if any scan well. The best way to tell is to read them aloud. When you find a statement that you feel strongly about that falls out of you mouth easily, start your song around it.

It might not be a good song when you are done. But it's a great way to bust the dam open.

Please take a look at Barefoot Cinderella for me.
