Was listening to this last night, and this album, particularly "The Gaze" and "There Are Objects And Objects," contains some of the coolest sounding, most powerful post-hardcore tunes I've ever heard. The way it's recorded with a certain rawness but yet has this loud, spine-tingling, wall of noise kind of thing going on. The tremolo parts at the end of objects and objects and the one part in the gaze right before it goes into that spectacular jam out part send chills down my spine, even after bumping this album for about 3-4 years now. The guys voice sounds so badass on the record too, really emotional, really powerful. This was one of the first records that really got me into emo/post-hardcore and I think it's just a fantastic piece of music. Shame the band started sucking after this.

Anyway discuss..

i actually just listened to this twice on my train ride home and I love it. opening riff for forward/backward has the zest of CoC.

and their second cd def wasn't as good, but had some alright up beat tunes like a literal tide and new energy.

Edit: at quick glance, i mistook this for My Herpes Have Always Killed Cowboys

i'm not saying notes is bad, but it sounds like a completely different band.

so drastic of a change. i remember i bought this album on fluke 2 years ago and got into it a year later after getting into CoC. i'm really into this music right now too

Ya I've also randomly been getting back into this. The way "The Gaze" builds is just perfect. That chord progression is great too: Emin7, Emin7(#7), Emin7, Cmin7, Emin7.

seriously that part with the backwards guitar and that intense snare roll and then it just explodes, so good

I mean ya but it's sick. That idea is used a lot by Wagner and is also reminiscent of Kuja's theme from FFIX. I think that one goes Dmin7 - Bbmin7 - Gbmin7, which essentially dots out an equal division of the octave in major thirds so that when you modulate back to dmin7 there is sick symmetry. Also, the intervals you modulate by (major 3) is tonally at odds with characteristic interval of the minor chord (minor 3), producing a sweet contrast. Go ahead now laugh it up.

i was laughing at the fact that you inserted that in the first place.

...and i don't know what you were trying to accomplish with that last post. its obvious that there is a contrasting dissonance. Its not like you're saying anything complex, its just the way that you're saying it and the fact that you felt the need to say it that seems funny.

really what it comes down to is a interesting inversion of the dorian mode in A flat minor, but the diminished E is what kills it

The reason I say it is because I find it interesting. I'm not "accomplishing" anything other than articulating why I really like a cool passage of music.

I love when Nick talks theory. Not sarcastic either, it rules.

Spence, I decided "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out" is hands down the best Smiths song. Only one that gives it a challenge is "This Charming Man."
