Wouldn't go that far.
Horribly over-rated though. I can't believe London Calling is rated #1 on Sputnik's all time punk albums! I can't even make it through the entire thing it's that boring.
oh so is it cool to hate on the clash now or something

The Clash were ground breaking from 1977 through 1982. They were a punk band in 77 but evolved into a brilliant band for their time.
Now it's hard to compare them but they were amazing when I was a kid.
Now, I know most have a limited understanding of punk as a musical genre versus "punk" as a retarded way of life, so when you say "they're not punk" is it because of their lack of 3 chord harmony or is it because they inspired a whole offshoot of music in the same vein as what Velvet Underground did for indie rock?

Nah I don't rate them at all. It's the whole poor musicianship and bad dynamics... Songs are alright written, but they butcher them. How can you screw up your own songs? lol.

to me they just dont sound like punk music as i know it. theyre definetly v v good and inflential i just dont hear the punk. Like the ramones and the sex pistols are both distinctly punk but i dont see how the clash is. The fact that they use more than 3 chords they use off beat struming, they use other intrusments besides the rock 4. they have solos etc

have you realised that rock stars always seem to lie so much?
John Lydon once said he cared but he never really gave a ****
said he'd use the money he made so that people would have somewhere to go
but now he lives in the USA and snorts coke after the show.
why is it that rock stars always seem to lie so much?
Joe Strummer once said he cared, but he never really gave a ****
Said he'd use the money he made to set up a radio station to make the
airwaves full of something more than ****, have you noticed we're still Waiting?
you must realise that rock stars always seem to lie so much
some will always tell you that they care, but they don't really give a ****
still you suckers don't ever learn that rock stars deal in money not truth
it's good Buisiness to exploit you, just look at Lydon or Strummer for proof.

and dboon put it perfectly, the clash evolved from a punk band into a diverse rock band that made music that can be rightfully placed amongst the best rock songs ever written. but they always pushed the punk/whole 77 thing movement, in the first song on this album with lines like "phony beatlemania has bitten the dust" strummer is saying that the band represents this new punk movement in their ideology

The "Rotten to the Core" song seemed relevant to me. Like what the DBoon's Ghost guy said, they were punk in '77 for sure but I think in their evolution as musicians they seemed to lose touch with what they once were.
I'm wondering who really cares though since they were better at writing music then relaying any particular message anyways. For all intensive purposes though, there's no reason why that album can't be categorized as punk.

Music evolves. At the time the clash were punk. Nuff said.
Joe Strummer was a legend and a great guy and having worked with strummerville i have to say he left a great legacy and made a great contribution to music.

This, except I was 11 or so.
I still love them and listen to them. I find myself enjoying obscure tracks off Sandinista to this day that I didn't like when I was a teenager.
It just goes to show. I am not a huge fan of certain tracks off Combat Rock for example, but Straight to Hell, Atom Tan and Ghetto Defendant carry it well enough.
There is no band like the Clash, and there will never be another band like the Clash, though Rancid tried pretty hard.
The UK debut album left enough of a bread crumb trail to see where the band would evolve to, and reggae, dub and first wave ska was always music of revolution, and as far as breaking down boundaries regardless of popular or what the record label wanted the band to market demographically, The Clash always marched to the beat of their own drum and made the music they wanted to, and that epitomizes the ideaologies of street music straight from the heart.

I don't have the exact quote, but Joe Strummer once said one of the most frustrating things about punk was that it was supposedly about breaking away from the norm and doing your own thing, yet the minute you changed your music everybody attacks you for not being punk anymore. He said punk shouldn't be about strict guidelines, it's about freedom.

I'm a huge fan of everything they ever did... even the bizarre stuff on the last two sides of Sandinista. London Calling might not be "punk" to some people, but those people need to dig into it a little deeper. London Calling is an example of what punk can be: as in it doesn't have to sound like the Sex Pistols/Ramones/Buzzcocks/etc...
PunkItUp
12-27-2008, 07:16 PM
people just need to read more and as you said "dig a little deeper." it amazes me how many people in this forum have so little perspective about a genre of music they claim to love and admire. yet they want to stick it in a little box and say what it is and isn't. lots of things aren't "punk." but the Clash cannot be counted among those things
dig deeper, do some reading, and learn the history of rock n roll and you will have a new understanding of punk and all things related. otherwise poopty doo

But anyway.. I wonder who owns the rights to the songs of The Clash because I'm sure they had nothing but money on their mind when they approved MIA to sample Straight to Hell. Meh, whatever it's a shitty song off of their shittiest album anyway.

Though I think those people are more motivated by the fact that movie has to do with weed which is why they go straight to the pineapple express connection.
I remember when I first played this at the local bar up at college and everyone was going hey this is Paper Planes. And then my friend telling them after I had explained it to him that this is were they got that sound patch from.
I wonder why doesn't cause any controversy as did the who vanilla ice and queen thing did.

Uh, well that would be because M.I.A. sampled the guitar riff with permission from whoever owned the rights to the song I'm sure in exchange for $cashmoneys$ while Vanilla Ice is a talentless moron who stole the bassline of "Under Pressure" and then tried to claim it as his own even though everyone and their motha' knew he clearly jacked it. Oh, yeah and I'm not calling M.I.A. talented either...

Straight to Hell is a much better song live. The version on From Here to Eternity is very good.
But Mick has always been pretty pro-sampling since his days with B.A.D. and now with Carbon/Silicon, so it doesn't surprise me that they allowed MIA to sample it.
