Anyone hear Death Magnetic? I only heard the songs that they have up on the radio but I'm really liking it (and Lars)... Any thoughts on the album, things you liked things you didn't (try to keep it more drum focused but other things can come into play). I'm planning on buying it in a week or two.

I remember listening to one of the songs today driving back and thinking "I wonder if people on the forums will stop flaming lars" and thats why I decided to come back (I mean used to like it as a place to learn but it really got ridiculous before I left)

There are two reasons:

1) Digital Editing
2) Someone else played drums on this album.

I wouldn't doubt number 2, but if number 2 weren't true even digital editing wouldn't change what he was playing because they played everything "live"

BTW Damo hows the shop going?

I like his playing. He does seem to have some new tricks up his sleeve and his double bass chops seem to have improved substantially.

The song "My Apocalypse" comes to mind.

A little slow this time of year, but still ticking over.

Personally, I think this album would have had as much editing, EQing and fixing-up as any other theyve done. The fact that they all played it together doesnt really mean a lot.

haha.. weirdly, my favorite metallica album was his "one beat" album [the black album]... he did the same thing in every song, but it went so well with all of them, that it didnt take away from the greatness of the cd.

everyting after that cd was complete garbage though...

anyways.. ive heard a few songs from this cd.. it seems like theyre ripping themselvs off.. except while doing that, they made it worse.

also, i dont really like the sound of the recordings.. although they are clear, and nice sounding, its almost annoying to listen to.

but you gotta dig that st. anger snare sound!!! :thumb:

drums were waaaaay to loud on this album, like he was trying to make sure we knew he wasent using that st anger snare sound the whole time. and his playing was pretty mediocre... his playing fit the song,, but it dindnt add anything too it.

Bah, I hate Lars' playing.....and Metallica for that matter. I saw a bit of them live and just wanted to give up on music forever. The blandness and predictability of everything they did was just nauseating.

There was a Metallica thing on TV last night and Lars talks like he's quite an intelligent guy but as soon as he gets behind his kit (they showed them rehearsing too!), he instantly looks and sounds like the n00b that never grew up. He has a nice set of equipment but he just makes it sound so disgusting. No amount of awesome gear can make you sound good if you have a crap touch, I guess.

Agreed. The hatred of metallica just seems like people are trying to find even the smallest excuse to hate them.

People are entitled to their opinions obviously, but the reasoning behind it can be a little obtuse. I find this album flows nicely and it's nice that they've harked back to the days of '...and justice for all' and such.

I guess my question to those of you doing the bashing is:

"Who liked Master of Puppets?"

I think the issue here, Fokker, is that the majority of the people doing the bashing are ones who probably never liked metallica, so in that context, it's kinda pointless. It's like asking a muslim person what they think of Pork.

I've always loved metallica. Interestingly enough, Lars actually has some dynamics now. In a lot of old metallica songs, he used straight rolls, but he's actually accenting now. I've always liked his drumming and always thought it fit metallica's sound.

Hell, there's an interview on youtube with Dave Grohl and Taylor hawkins as the interviewers. As a diehard foo fighters fan, I respect Dave and Taylor, not only for their drumming - flame me as much as you might - but for their opinion. Yeah they're not going to diss Lars on Metallica's own show, but there's a level of respect and love for the music in question, that one needs to have in order to say yes to the job of interviewing metallica. They both seemed genuinely impressed.

Additionally, in regards to the "digital editing" comments. Yeah it happened a lot on St. Anger, but apparently Rick Rubin made them practice for 2 months so that they'd be able to play the songs end to end. I'd argue that while the drum beats aren't necessarily difficult on their own, in the context of a song they'd become quite difficult as you've got so many different parts. It's not one grooving beat for 6 minutes i.e. Black Album and on; it's a complete change in tim sigs everyone 30 seconds to a minute. That would be difficult.

Fokker, I personally love "The Day that Never Comes". Gave me chills. I need to buy this album so I can listen to the rest of it.

P.S. Damo, was it you or Bill who listed Lars as one of your influences?

Wicked song. I remember listening to And justice for the first time, hearing this song, and getting this feeling that it was about cliff, even though it's an instrumental. Went online, looked it up, and it turns out I was right. That's a testament to song-writing ability.

What the hell?

...

Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if you listened to the wrong album and thought it was Death Magnetic. My reaction was the exact opposite of what you're describing! I thought that everyone in the band stepped it up except for Lars, who continued to play completely bland, boring, and unoriginal parts. To be honest, I heard alot more (and better) playing on the black album...with this it seems like he pretty much just played generic beats the entire way through the album and hardly played any fills at all.

I dunno...I'll defend Lars' (studio) playing all the way through Reload, but the recent couple albums have been absolute garbage IMO.

most of the people who bash are people who say that they will never be as good as they used to be when they were drunk and had long hair. haha

i like metallicas old stuff... in fact, theyre some of the best songs/albums ive ever heard... but the new stuff is pure crap.

and i would list lars as an influence... but lots of people start out playing his old stuff cuz alot of it was slow, easy to figure out, and fit the songs well.

if you think of how long that guy has been playing, he should be able to do alot more than that to add to the music.

chad smith doesnt really do anything extravagent in rhcp, but you dont see anyone bash him, but thats cuz he adds to the song, and knows what hes doing.

Definitely me. Just try being a metalhead in the 80's and NOT liking Metallica.
Lars was the first guy I saw that made drumming a VISUAL experience. Also, being the band leader, he taught me that we dont always have to be 'the guy at the back'. A drummers role is significant and we are able to drive a band, onstage and off.

Props to Lars.

Interestingly, I really dont rate Chad Smith. I never found anything he's done to be that impressive, even when it comes to groove. Then again, you can always pick a player and find someone better than him in any area, so I have simply learnt not to judge. Take players for their merits and move on.

Quote of the year.

The fact that everybody knows Lars his name (both drummers as well as none-drummers) should say about enough of his merits.

The dude accomplished a whole lot more then most drummers out there. A lot of what was accomplished might not have been behind the set maybe, but that just shows that being in the entertainment industry as a drummer, is not only about drums.

Fact is that there's a very good chance that nobody would have ever heared about metallica if Lars wasn't part of it. The same can be said about James off course, but still...

He deserves respect, even if it is only for putting Metallica on the map.

Actually...that's not true at all. PLENTY of people have gotten ridiculously far with little or no talent whatsoever...I can't tell you how many lame Nirvana rip-offs in the mid/late 90's that were the newest biggest hit that I had the misfortune of seeing live...none of them could play. I don't really care WHAT you're playing...even if it's 3 power chord rock songs...but if you can't reproduce it reasonably well live, there's no point in doing it IMO. Singers are probably the worst lot...probably about 80% of popular rock vocalists from the post-grunge world literally could not sing.

The music industry is all about knowing people...actual talent is iceing on the cake.

I love the songwriting on Death Magnetic, but the mix is TERRIBLE! Its so damn overcompressed at like -3 RMS, the snare drum clips....urg, its really hard to listen to, I have to turn it down. I can put in MoP or AJFA or the Black album and just pump the volume really loud, this I can't do it.

I think Lars' drumming on this isn't that great, but better than the Black Album. He still hasn't come close to his zenith, which was AJFA IMO.

But yeah, as far as the songs go, they are quite good.

See honestly, I enjoy his playing on the black album the most. It was alot more restrained, but it actually GROOVED and fit the music perfectly. He also found alot of simple phrases that worked really well as hooks...little things like the BOOM TAH BOOM PISH segue into the chorus on "Unforgiven," "Tah-tahtahtahtah Bish" in Sad But True, etc.

If he was just trying to prove himself on AJFA, then that's a shame. What got lost, though, is the fact that his *slightly* busier playing FIT THE MUSIC better than what he's doing now. He's playing thrash metal, not AC/DC!

The fact that they recorded this album without a click tells me something about Lars....he still isn't that good, but he played very solid on this album.

There was no protools, no click track, and they didn't record it together as a band, they did instruments seperately, just without the click.

If I had to complain about anything in the "drum" category of the album is that for some reason the snare sounds different in some songs. There's some songs where it sounds like its leaning towards that St. Anger sound, then it sounds alot more dry on other tracks. The drums are WAY too loud, and the I don't like the mix of the album at all.

Well, I'm single for tax purposes, at least. ;)

It depends where you are. The salaries around here are actually pretty decent...starting salary for Chicago teachers is around $46k. When you get a Master's degree, that jumps up to even higher. Granted, it's not exactly executive/billionaire level, but more than enough to live comfortably IMO, particularly when the trade off is: more rewarding/interesting work, 4 months of standard vacation, etc.

I can honestly say that from what I've heard of Death Magnetic (Day That Never Comes, My Apocalypse, and a couple others), it contains some of, if not the absolute, worst drumming I have ever heard. The "groove" in Day That Never Comes isn't a groove, it sounds like a 10 year old who just got a new set of drums for Christmas. And what's up with the fills in the intro? Ruined it within the first 30 seconds. Then again, it isn't all Lars' fault, the songwriting was garbage anyways. None of it is interesting, and I'm pretty sure I could find a group of 12 - 14 year old kids who could write better songs than that, and execute them much better as well. I'm not even going to start on the mixing and mastering aspect of the whole thing either... just gonna say it sounds like ***, no matter what you play it through. Taking part in the Loudness Wars and Over compression aren't good things. Just my opinion, take it or leave it.

Both artists compose a majority (if not all) of their music.

ok so you can't actually answer the question
It's a moot point either way because playing an instrument does not make one a musician. They both use their voices as instruments so there you go.

well you know when you turn on that thing between your ears and think about it musicians typically perform with other musicians at least on occasion because collaborative efforts are a great example of musicianship
Not really...there are plenty of brilliant musicians who did little or no collaborating. That being said, but Diddy and Jay-Z have collaborated with about a gazillion other artists. Granted, they're mostly (not all) within the hip-hop genre, but that is irrelevant.
