hostility is unbecoming of you!
guitrguy
09-17-2008, 10:09 PM
I'm not being hostile. It's just me harshly saying why I think you guys hold the album in such high regard.
Mr. Ron
09-17-2008, 10:10 PM
the "clean" vocals on focus are killing it for me
well it's really really really good
and the vocals on TIA are exponentially better
Iluvatar
09-17-2008, 10:11 PM
anything with asterisks is harsh silly boy

Angmar
09-17-2008, 10:12 PM
This will probably be the album of the year.
And yes I can say that without having finished it.
the last track leaves a bit to be desired but other than that yeah ownage album
Mr. Ron
09-17-2008, 10:13 PM
idk this seems like a band i would have to listen to a bunch of times to really get into. The clean vocals are lulz. ****ing mr. roboto
Iluvatar
09-17-2008, 10:14 PM
clean vocals are so much better on Traced in Air
btw the last track is so perfect. creates a revolving aspect to that album that is so nice on repeated listenings
Angmar
09-17-2008, 10:15 PM
They take a few listens to get used to.
This album has much different clean vox, they're still altered but only very slightly, get it and listen to it a lot and come back to Focus and the vocals will probably bother you a lot less.
hopefully i'll get into it more
right now integral birth, the space for this and the unknown guest are my favorites
Integral Birth stuck out the most, probly my favorite
Iluvatar
09-17-2008, 10:18 PM
King of Those Who Know is the best song on the album dudes
choosing my favorite song is like choosing between children
but integral birth is the firstborn so it's my current favorite. gotta love that chorus
King of Those Who Know is the best song on the album dudes
minus the intro, that song is pretty great
Angmar
09-17-2008, 10:21 PM
I will be listening to this album and only this album until I got to sleep.
Iluvatar
09-17-2008, 10:22 PM

It'll probably be the only thing I listen to tomorrow as well.
Angmar
09-17-2008, 10:29 PM

And an extra in case the first scratches!

Hornets of the mother****ing Pogrom
that's in my top ten definitely.
Prince of Darkness
09-18-2008, 08:39 AM
some of the vocals (especially on Evolutionary Sleeper) reminds me of The Mars Volta.
this album rocks. although I do miss the robo vocals...
they're still slightly robotic, they just aren't as ridiculous as they were on veil of maya
jrowa001
09-18-2008, 10:05 AM
after a few more listens i really am enjoying this more and im getting more out of it. its around a 4 for me right now.
Prince of Darkness
09-18-2008, 10:16 AM
it's a 4 for me as well. The vocals play a much larger role on this album, which is great, but this album needs a Textures.

the death metal vocals on this album are better
they're slightly better, but it's so overshadowed by how much the clean vocals have improved
34 minutes is a sublime length for an album. more bands should write shorter albums

Traced In Air rules because Cynic have stopped sounding awkward.
They sound the same.
I don't get this whole OMG FINALLY I CAN LISTEN TO THEM. Okay, there isnt much in the way of robot vocals. So what? The vocals really arent drastically different at all and the core sound is still the same.
Angmar
09-19-2008, 12:16 AM
I find it kind of odd that peoples Cynic listening experience can be completely ruined by robot vocals.

I don't recall any albums grabbing my attention as much as those two did.

They sound the same.
I don't get this whole OMG FINALLY I CAN LISTEN TO THEM. Okay, there isnt much in the way of robot vocals. So what? The vocals really arent drastically different at all and the core sound is still the same.
no man I love the robot vocals.
And yeah they do sound the same, but idk the songwriting seems tighter this time around to me.
The drums are probably the best part of this album actually. Reinert is the man.

Music sounds waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better live. I didn't even recognise Evolutionary Sleeper, even though I had been jizzing over the live performance video a while back.

damn this is good, didn't think it would be this impressive. 35 minutes is kinda pushing on being an EP
masada
09-21-2008, 09:27 AM
no it isn't
It's about as long as Focus. I mean it's a bit short, but anywhere between 35 and 40 minutes is a good length for an album.
Angmar

Yeah seriously people it's only 2 minutes shorter than Focus.

yeah, ive never cared about length as long as the length fits the sound...and for Cynic, ive always found that a shorter length. Ill find out if I agree with Traced In Air when it comes out.

this is horrible logic.

thats a shame. This makes me doubt an album i havent even heard.

Does anyone like this more then Focus, I don't think I do.
The vocals and drums are better on the new album, but as far as bass and straight up sick riffs, I'm gonna have to go with Focus.
It's too early for me to say which one I like more though

To be honest...
...
So far, I'm extremely dissapointed. :( The vocals are kind of annoying and the bass is waay too low in the mix. Nothing really stands out like it did on Focus...

I sort of had this feeling the first few times I listened to it (on the Subway which didnt help) but the more I listened the more I liked it.

Wait, do you like the vocals on Focus more? If so, weird.
I do agree that the bass is far too low, that's actually my only real gripe with the album.

Mmm no not necessarily, but they didn't bother me. There seemed to be alot more DM growling on Focus, whereas on this it's almost all cleans. He just sticks to the high end waaay too much...it starts sounding really samey after a while.

so far after listening twice i have to say that Traced in Air is excellent but not what i hoped for. i wish cynic would have incorporated more death metal elements and not gone a bit soft, as we can all admit they did (compared to focus). tymons growls are awesome i have to say, but i'm not digging on paul's singing as much as i'd like too and that's my main complaint. the robo vox seem less "alien" and more passive than on focus and that was a huge disappointment. the direction of the album in general is less "focused" and certain parts like the tribal chanting on "the unknown guest" are pretty much unnecessary imo. i plan on listening a lot more and hopefully this will grow on me as i listen/understand it more.
4/5 atm

uh what
also cynic were pretty bad at straight death metal

and certain parts like the tribal chanting on "the unknown guest" are pretty much unnecessary imo why doesnt it make you want to hop on the next ship to the homeland

The sort of put Tymons vocal output on the back burner, maybe Paul wanted to be center stage.

I like that though...I never really thought the death growls were really that good with Cynic.
I do agree there is a severe lack of bass volume though. That's one thing that still bugs me even after subsequent listens.

agreed with masscows. eagle nature was the weakest song on focus, and that was the most metal influenced. The vox on this are so much more inspiring and fit much better, though focus' vox were still amazing.
plus reinert just never stops amazing.

The death metal part of Cynic was always the worst part anyways.

 there is no "worst part" when it comes to Cynic.

they never played straight death metal, as you would know from listening to their pre-focus demos, eliminitwit or whoever you are.
ok, 3rd spin and it's all starting to click for me with the exception of a few small sections on The Unknown Guest and Nunc Stans. Bass needs turned up, i agree with whoever said that.
