"Pray for our military men and women who are striving to do what is right. Also, for this country, that our leaders, our national leaders, are sending [U.S. soldiers] out on a task that is from God. That's what we have to make sure that we're praying for, that there is a plan and that plan is God's will."
Yeah I got it wrong.

Sarah Palin said something to that extent about the Iraq war. My question is, didn't the people who caused 9/11 have the same justification for why they were doing it? I'm sorry, I'm just confused on this whole "for God" argument. Somebody please make sense of it for me.
That wasn't the quote. It wasn't to that extent.
Once you get the quote correctly and have it in context, everyone would he happy to discuss.
I will say now that clearly you're not up on your religion. The Iraqi god is a terrible meanie with a rag on his head and brown skin who kills women for having vaginas. The American god wears kindly earth tones and often has a halo around his head and is kind, caring and benevolent, just like us Americans. He is nice and white with a cute elderly beard and deep booming voice, but also he looks like Morgan Freeman sometimes too, and everyone loves Morgan Freeman. So well spoken.

Ok I found the quote. Yeah I didn't think I had it right. My bad.

No worries!
The American god and the Iraqi god talk through angels who act as translators. See, the American god refuses to learn farsi or arabic and the Iraqi god learned the language a long time ago but is amused at how much smarter he is than the arrogant American god so he silently mocks him and even though it takes much longer to communicate through angels who translate it's much more fun that way.

Look I'm sorry to mock and make fun.
I don't know what you expect people to say. I know you expect serious discussion but I can't help but mock the whole thing.
9/11 didn't happen because of difference in beliefs or because Allah told them to do it. I don't know where you got that. FOX news?
9/11 happened because we consistently meddle in affairs we have no business meddling in by giving Israel billions of dollars in the name of freedom and democracy and when Israel turns around and commits genocide using weapons we gladly gave them people are going to get pissed. SO they hijack some planes and fly them into buildings. It's unlikely Uncle Sam wants you to know all of this, so they tell you "they're jealous" or "Allah willed them to do it".
No. Just no.

I like ragging on Palin as much as the next guy, and she deserves it. But I cannot in good conscience grab this one. She's not saying that the Iraq War is part of God's plan. She's saying that she prays that God has some plan for Iraq. In other words, she is praying that her son and all the other men in Iraq are not putting their lives in danger for nothing.
To say that she believes we are on a mission from God is just stupid. That's not at all what she said.

Regardless of the quote, you can't deny that there are some in power who feel that way.

No I cannot. I cannot deny it at all. Palin's said better but it was this statement we were dissecting. Bush has said some awesome stuff. They all have. It's hysterical to see fanaticism in the White House and Americans accept it because it's God and not Allah!
It's an unfortunate hypocritical byproduct which is why mockery ensues from my end as well as picturing American God versus Iraqi God in a fight to the death maybe Rock 'em Sock 'em Robot style!
It's scary but if I make enough fun of it, it becomes easily digested for me.

I wonder what your average dumbass American Christian would think if they realized that Arabic speaking Christians refer to God as Allah as well

I thought in Arabic Allah was more than just a generic word for God.
like isn't al-aliah the word for god and Allah connotes a specific conception of a monotheistic supreme being?
Also, when anyone says they're on a mission from God I think of the blues brothers.
ya^^ allah and god are the same thing, the disagreement is about who the prophet of the god was, which is also the disagreement of sunni and shiites [sp?] i think...
Smokey D

No. The original disagreement between Sunni and Shia was about the political leadership of the Islamic community. Shia believed it should remain in Mohammed's family, passing through his daughter to his son-in-law. Sunni accepted that it could be passed to the Companions. The main difference today is eschatological, I think.
And the main difference between Christians and Muslims isn't who the prophet was. It is about what Jesus was (ie Christians think he was God, Muslims think he was a mortal prophet).
thank you encylopedia britantica. im gonna leave now.
but seriously, thanks ;]

It is regardless of which religion you belong to, that was the point

I think "ilaha" is "deity" (as in, "la ilaha illa allah") more or less but "allah" is THE God.
Also, when anyone says they're on a mission from God I think of the blues brothers.
That's my first thought whenever I see this thread.

That, and Christians don't acknowledge Muhammad at all since the two religion's basic messages contradict each other (i.e. if one is right, the other can't be)

Ilah means "god" and al means "the." Al + ilah = Allah, "the god."

Out of curiosity, I have heard that the most frequently quoted prophet in the Quran is Jesus, true?

I haven't gotten far enough in the Qur'an to know though.

But the questions stands...it doesn't seem entirely unreasonable to me, though I would have assumed Muhhamad was tops.

I have no idea if it's true or not. As sick as his flow is, IT's lyrics are often not quite, well, sane.

It wouldn't make sense for Muhammad to be quoted in the Qur'an since it was recited TO him

I went to a christian school obviously, and we spent our time on the five largest religions. Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, and Hinduism.
Islam actually ended up getting the largest cut of the semester, closely followed by Judaism.
I thought it was very interesting.

Honestly, considering any slight reality to the existence of Jesus or Mohammed as actual people...., leave them the **** alone cause they're tired of being molested by wack jobs and they're turning over in their graves.
