As much as I hate artificial sounds in music, I am without a drummer, and being a guitar player that writes technical metal/death metal with classical influences, I have to accept that finding a drummer will be a tough assignment.

I was wondering what the best method of programming drums and recording drums tracks is when dealing with complex rhythms and songs ranging from 7-20 minutes. Is there a certain machine that is perfect for what I'm looking for or is there a computer program I can buy or download that will work good, since record on our computer?

The easiest way: Fruityloops + some samples.
A better way: VST plugins like Drumkit From Hell or Big F*cking drums.

Genghis Tron programs all their drums, I think they use a computer program and not an actual drum machine. Maybe check out their site and see if you can learn anything else?

any sequencer-like software will do. But fruityloops is probably one of the more easier things to start with.

The Alesis SR16 could be your cheapest, portable option.
