View Full Version : Underrated actors

In your eyes of course. Name 'em.

To start, three actors who were in Saving Private Ryan;

Barry Pepper
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barry_Pepper
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001608/

Barry Pepper was born in Campbell River, British Columbia, Canada, and after some small parts in movies and TV, was cast as religious sniper Pvt. Daniel Jackson in Saving Private Ryan, and followed that up with Enemy Of The State and The Green Mile. Unfortunately, he got involved in Battlefield Earth for which he "won" a worst supporting Razzie award. He still gets some good roles but I think Battlefield Earth killed a potentially great career.

Adam Goldberg
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adam_Goldberg
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0004965/

Described as usually playing the "stereotypical New York Jew", Adam Goldberg had an early role as Mike Newhouse in Dazed and Confused, ("So, you're not gonna go to law school? What do you wanna do then?" "I wanna dance!") and went on to appear in two more Richard Linklater films, Waking Life and Before Sunrise. He played Pvt. Stanley Mellish in Saving Private Ryan and re-united with Dazed and Confused co-star Anthony Rapp in A Beautiful Mind, and has had recurring roles on TV such as Nick Rubenstein on Entourage and Milo on My Name Is Earl.

Giovanni Ribisi
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giovanni_Ribisi
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000610/

Described by imdb as "Perennially boyish American character actor known for his dark, somber demeanor, stark versatility and bizarre, off-the-wall performances in cutting edge contemporary films", Giovanni Ribisi was born in Los Angeles in 1974, the twin brother of actress Marisa Ribisi. He started acting from a young age in television, and was in movies in the '90s and 2000s like Saving Private Ryan, Gone In Sixty Seconds, The Virgin Suicides (narrarator), Lost In Translation (Scarlett Johansson's husband), and also had a recurring role as Ralph on My Name Is Earl.

Mathieu Kassovitz
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matthieu_Kassovitz
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0440913/

French actor, director, and screenwriter, considered a top talent in French film. If you have ever seen the French film Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain, he played Audrey Tautou's boyfriend, as well as playing Robert alongside Eric Bana and Daniel Craig in Munich, and also had a small role in The Fifth Element. As a director, he directed La Haine (Hate) with Vincent Cassel.

Aaaaaaaaaaaand go.

Both Barry Pepper and Giovanni Ribisi were good choices. I've always loved Ribisi.

I'd also like to throw Ben Foster's name out there.

I've become a fan of Jeremy Sisto lately.

Also, I don't know how underrated in France he is, but, Jamel Debbouze, who was also in Amelie (and my avatar), is really good.

Seriously, at work, when Lazy Town comes on, I can't help but notice how awesome this guy is at playing "Rotten Robbie". He's probably the first extremely hyperbolic bad guy I've seen in a live action kids show which easily rivals the caricatures present in western SatAM cartoons.

Leslie Nielsen was legendary in the Naked Gun series, especially that part right after the fire when he climbs out on the balcony and he stimulates the statues.
