I'm in the mood for an RTS game...
I haven't played all that many. What would you rate as the greatest of them all?

Dawn of War is the best RTS I've ever played.
All the Blizzard games are awesome if you like a stupid AI with constant pathing issues.
I still play them too though. I played Warcraft 3 last night matter of fact.

I can't stand the warcraft games, but Star Craft has to be one of the best. Dawn of war is a blast, as well. though perhaps not as well realized as it could be.

The AI is terrible, I usually play on bnet though.
EDIT:
I don't play many RTS's, but do tell about this dawn of war.

The thing about DoW is it forces you to fight. No camping for resources and building a super army. Resource points make so much more sense to force a fight rather then hoarding gold or lumber. Maybe not the best single player game though.
Starcraft is and will always be among the best RTS games simply for the zerg.
Fear the zerg!
I look forward to SC2.

Dawn of War is a couple years old. It's a Warhammer game. Basically instead of resource gathering you capture and hold strategic points througout the map. It forces constant battle throughout the game. Otherwise it's the typical basic RTS game. Upgrades, building upgrades, etc..
I loved it when it first came out and we played the hell out of it and sometimes still play. It's a lot of fun to play co-op as well as head to head.
Google it for more info I probably do it no justice.

.
Good point on the strategic points, it really was a refreshing step for RTS's. I hear that in the future they will be limiting the number of you units you can have to a small amount, shifting the focus of gameplay even more to strategy and further away from resource hoarding.
As for supreme commander, I hated that game. It was soooo bland!

Easily Supreme Commander
Tiberian Sun was also cool but the AI cheats in that game. My friend and I would play against AI's, he'd play NOD and completely cloak his base, and they'd still nuke him.
Rise of Nations was also fun.

the grand scale. The fact that there are actually super units in this game, and the fact that nukes actually behave like nukes instead of just being miniscule bombs. The fact that its designed to be a long, slow game. The fact that it has a navy, and a quite powerful navy at that.

I would like it but it's such a hard game, once i actually started to figure it out i just stopped playing...i forget why, i was playing on my bro's comp, who knows, but it is a fun game, just very hard.

Starcraft would be my pick. The only other RTS games I've really played are C&C: Red Alert, which is pretty cool but easy, and a couple of the Age of Empires games, which are also fun.
A RTS that focuses more on strategy compared to building 5000 units and making one rush sounds like fun. I might have to check out this Dawn of War.
Seafroggys

Supreme Commander was not designed for rushing in mind, but sadly competitive play has boiled down to that. You could always play the 40x40+ km maps, then rushing becomes impossible.

I'm a big Red Alert fan, personally. Age of Empires 2 was mad though.

Dawn of war.
i also started playing Warcraft 3 again last week however i always seem to get my *** kicked. think ive won about 4 games since then
Dawn of War is a great game, for the reasons dboon gave; however, the gameplay that made DOW so great was improved and pretty much perfected in Company of Heroes. Which, incidently, also features amazing graphics.
I'd say it's the best rts out there, by far: fully destructable terrain, focus on fighting as opposed to resource gathering, really great physics and just plain old quality gameplay.
This might all change when Dawn of War II comes out, though.

Yeah Id go with dawn of war. very fun even if the campaign mode can become a bit tedious.

I always enjoyed the C&C games as well. I forgot the one with China, the US and the Terrorists but I used to laugh out loud constantly when playing that one. Solid gameplay with a good sense of humor.
One of my all time favorite RTS games that no one ever heard of that came out in 99 is Warzone 2100. It's now freely distributed. It was one of the first fully 3D RTS games and it's tank based combat with resource points you have to capture and hold to gain power for upgrades, buildings etc.. The awesome thing is the research is way deep and you can have hundreds of thousands of possible combinations with units.. everything from the types of tracks you use to the type of body to the type of weapons.. there are also flying units called VTOLs that all the same upgrades apply to, but the cyborgs are seperate and have a seperate research tree.
For a free game it's worth checking out. I've had it since 99 and I still play it.

As tired as the WWII theme is in videogames, Company of Heroes is fantastic.

I just felt supreme commander was really boring. It didn't seem strategic at all. The only strategy for me was what unit combos worked best together, and once I figured that out it was just mass building and sending them forward. The battles weren't that spectacular, and the whole super unit thing has been done to death. Whats more, the three armies weren't all that different.
I was excited when I heard that there would be navies, but once using them it wasn't so exciting. Ships are pretty much useless, even on heavily watered maps. All you needed were planes, which were pretty cool.

Company of Heroes. The level of detail is awesome, fantastic sound (ambience, combat, and voicework), usable terrain, etc.
Total War focuses on massive battles, I think. Company of Heroes is smaller scale than that. There's a demo available on Steam.

Hey anytime Amit.. I think you'll enjoy it.
I don't think it will go higher then 800x600 though. The original game had a special shortcut for 3dfx High Res which is lulzy for those who remember glide and 3dfx from back in the days before directx.
It's free though. Free is always good! I wonder if they updated driver support for higher resolutions.

I've been dying to try CoH. I've heard lots of great things.
Total war focus half on the battles(which are massive) and half on turn based empire building. The level of detail and realism is great for rts fans who are into that sort of thing, but it isn't enjoyable for casual gamers. Still, you can't help but admire the level of detail and realism they instill into the Total War games.

I once watch an ant battle in real time. The red ants had a 100 yard battle column stretching from their home fortress to a small black-ant outpost. The reds were going inside the mound, grabbing larvae and black-ant body parts and carrying them back to their home. It was pretty cool.
