View Full Version : Favorite drummer and bass player combo?

natedoppler
09-09-2008, 12:06 PM
The bond between the bass player and drummer is one of the most unbreakable and important in a band. The bass player must match with the drummer's bass drum and the drummer must pay attention to the bass player's subtleties of tone, rythym, and intensity.

Some duos are guitar players/drummers, but being a bass player myself, I enjoy the relationship between drummer/bass. When these two players know each others' playing style, the sky is the limit for percussive possibilites..

WHO are your top three Bassist/Drummer combo?

Hell yeah Sean Squared! I would put Steve DiGiorgio/ Gene Hoglan in that category too. Hard choice, but I would probably go with the Seans because of their influence on not only Cynic but in Gordian Knot as well.

sean reinert and sean malone (in cynic) or steve digiorgio (in death)

i mean both players in both instances have chops galore, and both bassists are excellent and unique for their styles (sean for his finesse, phrasing, and tone and digiorgio for his technique and speed).

um other than that i think neil peart and geddy lee are a given.

really fast roots for an entire set without a pick is somewhat harder than it sounds. i am developing my 3 finger technique right now and its a serious pain. it's fun developing and growing at it, but he is quite good, i believe he was borknagar as well.

Why not just play with a pick, then?

...It seems like one should use the best technique suited for what one needs to play. The advantage of playing with fingers is that you can reach across strings much easier and play multiple string arppeggios...the advantage of playing with a pick is that you can play single notes really really fast. :p

only cheating bastards play with a pick, plus your tone goes down the toilet when you use a pick imo. i mean digiorgio, tony choy, alex webster (and countless other great death, power, thrash players that used their fingers) are all examples of fingerstyle players who push their chops and develop their technique to the point where no pick is needed. picks on bass are freaking lame.

phhhhh it's personal experience so it's as much of a fact to me as it is an opinion. i mean in the music program i am in here at school the bass instructor (who has played for gloria estefan, and several other large latin and jazz acts)
literally tells people who play with a pick to pick up fingerstyle (he's usually fine with people doing both, and so am i as long as they primarily use their fingers).
god, don't argue with a freaking bass performance major about things you know nothing about. i mean i have only heard like 3 players in my life who played with picks and had a good low end to their sound. it is all preference of tone, but i do my best to emulate the greats in their tone and 99% of them had a nice bottom end to their sound. bah, get this freaking thread back on topic.

Bass Major = no paying jobs in his future elitist snob.

P.S my main lurk is the dead Forum known as Bass guitar. So I've got some experience with bass major seeking asshats..

lol, i work really hard, and my prof as well as a few others i know have connections. i am not too concerned, you just have to work really hard and get your name out there, i have already had 5 different offers from different metal bands on small labels here in illinois, plus i have friends in finland who have alot of connections in the scene there so i can always fall back on that. i am not an asshat either (if that expression makes any sense at all )

the fall of troy has a sick bass/drums combo with those crazy guitar lines over them.

true they are quite tight. their instrumental sections are really cool.

um steve harris and roger patterson/tony choy were all very high in the mix. most of the time if you have a good set of speakers/headphones in progressive metal or traditional metal the bass is quite loud in the mix.
he was being facetious

3's drummer and bassist are good, but its the guitars and vocals that make me enjoy them.

God, what an easy thread in Rock & Metal.

Sean Reinert, Sean Malone - hands down.

Martin Lopez and Mendez were also great together...hmm there seems to be a pattern here.
yeah, Rienert is in my top 5 drummers easy, probably number 1 or 2, I need to get that Cynic album Focus.

Yeah almost everybody loves him b/c of that album. What have you heard from Reinert, interviewer? TBH His stuff on Aghora's self titled was as good but with Death he didn't really get to show what he was capable of other than playing metal.

The dudes in Atheist probably

yeah, they're great.

nothing outside death, but I love his drumming on that album. Personally I don't like Human as much as anything after that (ITP, Symbolic, TSOP) but because of Reinerts drumming, its so much better. I feel like Cristie is almost over the top sometimes and Reinert is better at knowing when to let rip and when to let back.

I most certainly am not an idiot, I just think most of your threads are stupid

I'm still going with Pastillas/Lance of Incubus. They were locked in really tight and wrote some catchy stuff.
