View Full Version : Large Hadron Collider: Should we let it happen?

The Large Hadron Collider — designed to replicate conditions in the universe immediately after the Big Bang and due to be switched on in 10 days — is being challenged by a last-minute lawsuit at the European Court for Human Rights.
Opponents of the Collider are afraid its ability to smash atoms at such high speeds that it will generate temperatures of one trillion degrees centigrade will create a mini-black hole that could “tear the earth apart,” reports the Telegraph.
Opponents of the project had hoped to obtain an injunction from the European Court of Human Rights that would block the collider from being turned on at all, but the court rejected the application on Friday morning. However, the court will rule on allegations that the experiment violates the right to life under the European Convention of Human Rights.
Here’s the case against the collider by Professor Otto Rössler, a German chemist at the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen:
"CERN itself has admitted that mini black holes could be created when the particles collide, but they don’t consider this a risk.
"My own calculations have shown that it is quite plausible that these little black holes survive and will grow exponentially and eat the planet from the inside. I have been calling for CERN to hold a safety conference to prove my conclusions wrong but they have not been willing.
"We submitted this application to the European Court of Human Rights as we do not believe the scientists at CERN are taking all the precautions they should be in order to protect human life.”
CERN conducted a safety review and concluded there is “little chance” the collider could create black holes that could endanger the earth.
Meanwhile, environmentalists in Hawaii have filed suit in federal court in the U.S., seeking to delay the switch-flip. The case was to be heard Tuesday.
CERN’s defense, from spokesman James Gillies:
"The Large Hadron Collider will not be producing anything that does not already happen routinely in nature due to cosmic rays. If they were dangerous we would know about it already. We are now concentrating on firing the first beams around the collider and then on fine tuning it until we can get collisions, when the science will start."

I dont think anything more needs to be said, apart from what you think should happen about the current situation.
I for one am pretty concerned about what this LHC can actually do, especially with the talk of these so-called "mini black holes."

We've discussed this previously. There isn't enough energy on the planet to sustain it long enough for it to do anything worth noting. It's purely an academic exercise and won't go beyond that. Fear of this is irrational once you realise that.

I think we were forwarned of what the LHC will do as long ago as 1984, through the warning od the prophet Egon Spengler in Ghostbusters: "Try to imagine all life as you know it stopping instantaneously and every molecule in your body exploding at the speed of light."
That's right, the LHC is going to cause a total protonic reversal.

There's a higher chance that you'll fall through your floor than there is for the formation of this black hole.
Actually I just made that up. But the chance is so low it's negligable, and the overwhelming majority of researchers don't consider it a threat.

The only thing that's really going to benefit from the LHC is our understanding of the universe.
That said, the first proton beam to go past the first few sectors of the main ring will go in on September 10th. The final synchronization tests between the "doors" of the LHC and the super proton synchrotron were successful. The beam will enter with an energy of 450 GeV and is expected by reach energies of 5 TeV by the end of this year. By 2010 the energy will be up to the designed performance energy of 7 TeV. There will be live broadcasts by CERN on the 10th starting at 9:00 UTC, I think.

I'm beyond excited about this. Sometimes being a nerd really pays off.

The LHC itself isn't expected to generate enough energy to make the formation of micro black holes occur by itself, so for even microscopic black holes to form, the extra spatial dimensions posited by extensions of the standard model would have to be true. That said, even if micro black holes are formed, they will ultimately emit much more energy they consume, collapsing in fractions of a second.

Maybe because you came to the wrong conclusion based upon its name (Large Hadron Collider) and the fact that it got 'turned on' today?
The only thing that happened was that a bunch of protons got circulated around the LHC.
You have to worry about its first Pb-Pb ion collision test. Of course, these won't occur until after its official unveiling next month on the 21st.

I was talking to my friend about this at work today. I told him that because of the extreme amount of power utilised by the LHC at the ALICE component, a creation of a strangelet might occur. I told him that, in the extreme remote possibility of a strangelet formation, that the Earth might become a quark star.
I think a 'ice-nine' event would be freakin' awesome. All the human race has to show about the remnants of what it once was is a quark star that's in the vicinity of a G-class star.
