Someone I was talking to last night (extreme right winger) made a claim that the reason the economy was so good under Bill Clinton is because he borrowed money from the future or something like that and the reason it's bad now is that we're paying all that off and not because of anything Bush has done.

I'd never heard this before, is it true? (I doubt it)

he's right that dems are economically incompetent but he's got the wrong reason

One of the reasons the economy was good was because the Fed was running a very loose monetary policy under Greenspan, and in some ways the credit crunch is the market's correction for that.

But at the time, Clinton was doing pretty much everything he was supposed to for that sort of policy, so I dunno.

A wise man one said: I only know I know nothing about economics.

Well actually I misunderstood, she was saying Clinton made a lot of short term loans that the next generation would have to pay off and we are now.

That makes more sense but I haven't heard it.

You're friend was trying to grasp at the arguement that Clinton was on a good wicket and had money to burn, but instead of reducing debt spent money. But realistically, it's a flawed arguement when you look at the economic climate at the time however, as Smokey noted. Any spending that is done wisely is an investment in the future.

ps. I hope your friend never goes into economics or politics

But also, Clinton built the biggest surplus in US history so he didn't really over spend or anything.
