Do you mean live? Or were you asking about their music in general?

I've never seen em live, but I think their studio stuff is certainly interesting enough without vocals. The music deserves their putting on a good show.

whats so special about the san diego show?

The San Diego Zoo. I live near Seattle but the tour doesn't even come close. When Scale The Summit played with Dream Theater, I flew to Denver to see it. Lucky for me, this time they got hooked up with BTBAM and Cynic. This time though, I'm getting a sweet hotel room for partying. Cuz sleeping outside in a strange city sucks ***.

soooo show tonight was awesome, they played Disease, Injury, Madness & Fossil Genera.
Foam Born (B) The Backtrack, Informal Gluttony & Backwards Marathon and even played Shevanel Cut A Flip. I was hoping for Aspirations when he said it was off the first album, no Mordecai, Selkies or Alaska tho.

They were spot on as usual, all the bands had vocal problems so he cut in and out a few times and was WAY loud, and that venue the drums are too loud in the mix. Still honestly annoys me how blah Dustie is when he plays, as usual I've NEVER seen him do anything remotely interesting

as for his vox, they're spot-on live. whether you like his growl or not is one thing, but he hits live what he records on the albums, which is impressive. On Colors_Live, when he sings the falcetto part in Aspirations it's crazy, he shows Cedrix Bixler-Zavala what hitting notes is all about.

it goes TSC, Colors, Self-Titled, The Great Misdirect, Alaska

Alaska has some ****ing epic songs (read: the first four) but as an album its meh. Great misdirect had some serious epicness, but just wasn't particularly cohesive. self titled was intense, wish they would rerecord the damn thing. colors=own, TSC is just mind blowing, start to finish. first half of mordecai is imperative to the second half of the song, its the contrast that makes it what it is.

tonight they played:

Obfuscation
Disease, Injury, Madness
More of Myself to Kill
Alaska
Ants of the Sky
Swim to the Moon
White Walls

Was pretty bummed they only played 2 old songs.

Townsend was incredible though.

Awesome man.

Yeah, like I said, I was disappointed with their setlist, but it was still good nonetheless.

I don't know why they did White Walls as an encore when they already played Ants of the Sky. I really wanted to see Backwards Marathon or something from TSC; would have even settled for Selkies. Oh well.

Static

Seeing them in 11 days...that's still a pretty cool setlist the only gripe I'd have is that Swim to the Moon and White Walls are two kinda big long epic pieces...I mean the two of them together clock in at over half an hour I'd have omitted one and used the time to play a couple other songs....

Colors is my fave, some people say it's just too much, but I love it, I think it's the most unique album I've ever heard, the song structures are so entertaining. I think the order truly is:

Colors- Great Misdirect- Silent Circus- Alaska- Self Titled

Many people say The Silent Circus is their best because it's more coherent and controlled, but Colors is their most dazzling. Silent Circus has a couple of weak tracks as well, but their best song is Mordecai just because.

Cocaine, you liked Mark and Jason better than Blake and Dan? Really? I guess I just don't like Mark's style at all.

I think I might have seen them in 2004, actually, because Alaska came out in the Summer of 05, I saw them in the summer but Alaska didn't exist in any capacity. It was Kevin on bass (and Jason and Mark were both drummers, FYI).

I think it was Jason on drums, but maybe it was Mark. I prefer Blake to them (even though Blake's a pretty bland drummer and live he can't stop staring at his arms) but I really preferred Kevin to Dan. Dan is a better bassist on the albums but live Kevin had absolutely ridiculous energy and he was a much better bassist than anyone realized.

this is the line-up they had the first time i saw them. Kevin Falk played completely different live than he did on the TSC recording. Watch him, it looks like he's playing guitar parts half of the time.

I just remembered an old 'viral' video they had out yeaaaaars ago, it was round this time (2004) and it was just about how faggy hardcore dancing was. Starred a really, really young Blake as some guy who spends his free time practicing his hardcore dancing and saying 'woot'.

The only part of TGM that isn't up to snuff is Swim to the Moon. Unfortunately, it's the longest of only six songs so it really brings the party down.

this has grown past "colors" for me, the first few times it was like "cool, but they already did this" then i started liking it more and more, until i decided i think it accomplished what "colors" aspired to.

Idk... I think that carnival-esque riff in Fossil Genera sounds ****ing evil.

listened to Swim to the Moon all the way through again. Its good, but I wish they could have split it up more, or used that chorus more. At the very end, its just breathtaking when that last chorus plays, why couldn't they made at least parts of it more of a theme in the song?

just speculating. I'm no Paul Waggoner.

Hollier
