I had a theory. Everyone who says that bass can't be used for solo's effectively and it doesn't have dynamic range blah blah blah - just isn't good enough.

yep, and that's the hilarious thing about solo bass - all that practice, all that proficiency...and it still can't measure up to instruments that were intended for such a role.
you have to get twice as good at bass just to become half as interesting as a guitar. it's sad but true. i play both instruments, and love both instruments. i pay attention to their strengths, but even more so, their weaknesses. i recognize the bass guitar's ability to be a lead instrument, as i've exhibited in some of my music; but i don't see it as a proper solo instrument. in fact, when given the choice, i'd almost always rather hear instruments accompany each other then play strictly alone.

I didn't say that wasn't true; you'd have to be way too good to make it playing solo bass as opposed to a guitar. Having said that, other than singer-songwriter type folks, the only people who generally like any solo musician are other people who play that instrument.
Bands > solo muso's any day.
But what do you define as a "proper solo instrument"? Are there any instruments people invented/built saying "you can only use this alone"?

I assume you mean that in the sense that they're playing without a backing band/accompaniment? cause otherwise it isn't very true, except maybe if you're just looking at rock music, but even then it's a stretch.

a proper solo instrument is one that doesn't sound like a rubber band being snapped. part of being a successful musician is ditching this fairy-tale, philosophical bullshit regarding subjective interpretation of sound and realizing music is collective just as it is individual.
being a successful musician means knowing how to please people. knowing how to manipulate an audience into feeling something that you feel too. that means taking into account their opinion on what "sounds good." taking into account the opinions of people who DO NOT PLAY MUSIC THEMSELVES, instead of just discrediting them to be logically infallible (or an accepting of all instruments as theoretically the same regarding melodic potential) on this subject.
its an opinion to say solo bass is stupid. yeah, no **** dumbass. but its an opinion a whole ****in' lot of people share. that whole lot of people = music fans. ignore them or not but lets not pretend logical infallibility means anything when it comes to actually making music.

Sorry but that's just a tad B/s. You're assuming that every one has the same taste in music. Even you know that your grandma is gonna think 'good' is something totally different to your room mate. Unless you're living with your grandma.:amaze:
You're basically saying we should all sell out and make music that other people like, cause if we're gonna look at music as a collective, or if we are to write for the majority of people, then we have to write the horrible music that is on the charts these days. If we were 'take into account the opinions of people who DO NOT PLAY MUSIC THEMSELVES' then we'd be taking a lot of uneducated advice. (Hence why I put my shitty song up the other day, I wanted advice from people who actually know a thing or two about bass.)
I agree with some of what you are saying, but it's ignoring personal taste and assuming that all music is made to show to the mass public. It's all subjective to your specific audience, which is what Funky is saying. Some people only take an interest in solo bass/whatever because they play that instrument, so as to experience all dimension of the instrument. (I know that's why I listen to it on occasion). But you're right, when you're just chilling out in your room by yourself, you want to hear an actually song with words and singing. But there's no harm in writing music that people other than yourself might not like.
Unless you don't enjoy composing for composing sake Raayl? Which is fine.

hip
and really, this isn't solo bass, what with the whole singing part
regardless of if its one guy or two
and voice/bass duo's have been around and interesting forever, and are decently common in jazz
hell, I played in one at a gig last night
not intentionally though - the power went out and we were keyboardless
still sounded fine... if quieter

Not.. really. I only ever liked it when played by a select few people (who I can probably count on one hand), and I still feel that way. My problem actually isn't with the style, my main gripe is that so few people can do anything actually listenable with it.

I agree, but I did really like the extremely high production values and unique chordal structure.

No don't get me wrong, it's a great song otherwise. I just hate when people throw in a stupid breakdown like that. I know they probably just wanted to show off their dance moves, but let's be honest - it totally kills the momentum of the song and it just screams "we ran out of ideas".
funkyhoney
08-30-2008, 03:05 AM
That concept reminds me of that song with JT and Madonna where they just "dance" at the end for a minute. When a song can't hold it's own without a video clip (i.e. pop/rap and what passes as rnb nowadays) it's just an epic fail.

I guess that guy couldn't have made all that much money. He still hadn't bought a guitar... :p
Good clips, but there's a very big difference between playing for general people and playing for bass players. It seems to me like he's out busking so that he can video record it and show bass players that "it can, like, totally be done dude" instead of going out and playing for the people on the street itself, and what he doesn't take into account is that quite honestly not many people seem to be all that interested. Sure people are dropping money in his case, but they don't really stick around or pay attention.
I never really got the whole "I'm going to play guitar songs on my bass so it'll sound like a guitar" thing myself. I'd just buy a guitar.

I somehow doubt he is out busking just to put a video online, for starters he doesn't have a myspace link there or any promotion, he is just some busker called Frank, I doubt he got a friend to video him for that, if he was that vain then some kinda promotion stuff would be on there.
Just because people walk by doesn't mean a lot of people are not interested, heard of something called needing to go somewhere and not having time to stand around just watching a busker? There is evidently a little crowd behind the camera and a lot people never stop to check out buskers anyway, no matter how good they may be.
Lastly, since when the heck was that a guitar driven song? He is hardly doing a guitar song on bass...
