View Full Version : Bass electronics messed up?

I thought my amp was broken at first, but then I tried to use my computer interface to record with my bass and started getting the same problem.

I'll hit a note and the audio will just cut out, a few seconds later it will cut back in and each time it does it there is a pop. When letting a note ring out it almost sounds like a cheap 80's synthesizer too, real electronic and buzzy.

I play a Fender Stu Hamm Urge II, I'm guessing it's a pickup problem, but if anyone could tell me a little more about it I'd appreciate the help.

edit: I've never replaced my battery from the active electronics, would that do it?

Have you tried changing the battery in the bass? Obvious choice, but sometimes people forget about these things. IIRC, the Urge II has active electronics in it, and the problems you described sound a lot like my bass when its battery is on the decline.

Edited my past right as you posted I guess, I'll go pick up a new battery and see how it goes

That does sound like a dead battery. If that doesn't end up being the problem, pop open the control cavity and make sure all of your solder connections are in place. Beyond that... take it to a shop.

I've had batteries die on me before. Usually sounds like really crappy weak distortion. Might be a more serious issue. A pop could be the result of a loose connection/shorting cable.

I replaced the battery earlier and everything is back to normal... I was a little worried for a bit, now I just feel a little stupid!

Oh well, now I'll know for next time.
