So is it me, or do female bass players not get enough credit for what they do. I mean I don't think I've ever heard of someone having a female in their list of favourite bass players. So, basically lets have a thread to get some coverage on these frequently over-looked musicians.

I've never heard a woman do anything that most men do. The only great bass player I've ever heard were men. Jaco, Victor, Cliff, Stanley, Geddy, John Pattitucci(sp). Can you actualy name a female bass virtuoso?
It's probably because most women have smaller hands than most men, and basses have spaced out frets. While most women could prabably get good, it would take much more effort for them to become amazing than it would a man, so they just stick with good. Most people are lazy.

virtuosos are over-rated
My favorites:
Kathy Coppola - Circle Takes the Square
Hannah Jones - The Devil is Electric/Operation: Cliff Clavin
someones bound to mention Tina Weymouth

Meshell Ndegeocello
Rhonda Smith might not be a virtuoso but she's quite amazing. Don't forget about Paz Lenchantin or Melissa Auf Der Maur either.
MX's very own Super_Deluxe as well! Not only is she a great bassist and fiddle extraordinaire, but she's also quite talented at eating mexican food. I've witnessed this first hand :p

what's hilarious is that by thinking you're paying respect to "female bass players," you're inadvertently insulting them. nice one. you give them extra praise for accomplishing a task done by many. kind of like giving credit to the retarded guy who can put on his own pants.
retards need special attention, and apparently, so do female bass players. you're an asshole.

M'shell Ndegeocello...Rhonda Smith...Paz Lenchantin...Melissa Auf Der Maur
TS, I actually frequently mention these ladies in my list of favorite bassists.
Tal Wilkenfield is growing on me as a sort of bass virtuoso.
Also check out Nat Blackburn (in the pipeline) and Victoria Beard (jungal).
There are female bassists all over, doing their own thing. Just have to know where to look, although it's unimportant - they're musicians too.

Most mainstream instumentalists are men. It stands to reason, then, that the best-known bassists are men.

This, basically. It was pretty much my first thought on reading the original post.
And yes, girls have small hands, so they couldn't possibly ever play double bass or cello well in an orchestra or jazz context. Nahh...
And short scale basses do exist btw...
Extra++ to the guy who mentioned CTTS though. Good stuff.

Hey tone down the hostility. This thread was my more polite way of asking "why don't you ever hear of any top notch lady bassists" without sounding like a complete novice on the whole subject.

cause girls suck at music. i wouldn't be lying if i said i knew of MAYBE 3 female musicians that i could actually respect independently. maybe i'm just not looking hard enough.
and for the record, one thing this world needs far less of is singer/songwriter girls holding acoustic guitars covering "New Soul" by that stupid euro-trash bimbo from the ipod commercials and getting it featured on youtube. seriously, how many times does a bad song have to be covered badly before it goes away?

wow. this is the most closed-minded statement I've ever read from you. It's like I don't even know you.
The music that Ani DiFranco puts out is 20x more listenable than dragonforce imo.

Yes, but the problem with that schoolyard rhyme is that the latter two delectible edibles are only conciets based on vague physical appearance. If the body really did put out sugary lemon drinks and chocolatey confections, I'd be all over the brown eye too, but in reality, pussy taste better than crap.
