half life did it for me partially but then i picked up team fortress classic and holy ****ing **** that was the real turning point for me

i got the orange box the day it came out but i haven't played tf2 very much since then (i've been playing COD4 and crysis a lot)

i might start up playing tf2 again since there's all new achievements and stuff now :]

IMO only decent console FPS of recent times has been the Metroid Prime series.

Currently really looking forward to Stalker Clear Sky being released, that's gonna be amazing \m/

Yer, PCs are basically the firm base of FPS gameplay. Has to be said though, Yahtzee made a good point about how a successful console FPS should compensate for the lack of ergonomic control with a feature like auto targeting or smoother movement e.t.c.

One of the most awesome things about Metroid Prime 3 is how the control system brought out the best of the Wii, and it really made the game work.

That said, I can't actually think of an FPS I've played on a console that's actually been bad purely because of it's nature as a console game, just nowhere near as good as anything on the PC. The only game that really springs to mind as being pure crap is Red Faction 2, which I had on GC a while ago, but even still the things that are mainly dragging it down are the fact that the plotline is piffle and the gameplay is flawed - not particualrly something I imagine resolving JUST because it's on PC. (talking strictly single player btw here)

Come to think of it, the very worst FPS I've ever played was Unreal 2 on PC- the second worst being Halo (which I played on the PC) but yeah, I know it's a console franchise and would probably suck even more on the Xbox.

But yeah, PC FPS do just wipe the floor with the consoles, even just for the fact that on the whole the quality of games is better due to the demands of the target market.

third person shooter games are rarely good (mass effect was the last one to that effect and even that wasn't purely a shooter) and i can't stand GTA's controls (playing it on PC only highlighted how awful the controls are); i have high hopes for gta4 though

and i disagree with that last bit but that's because i'm a jaded tfc player!

To be honest, the GTA ports were basically an excercise in how much they could bugger up controls for keyboard layout.

I hope they get their act together by the time GTA4 comes out.

this is true but i have also shockingly played all the gta 3 games on the console and it is just maddening how fun these games could be if they weren't hampered by:

1) horrible physics
2) horrible controls and handling
3) horrible vehicle physics

Halo isn't a good FPS series, it would be mediocre at best if it was PC only and would never have made it past the 2nd one.

GoW is a pathetic excuse for a game. Its like they came up with a game mechanic (crouching behind things) then just repeated it over and over in different scenery, it only got away with it because the game is so damn short.

TF2 is the best multiplayer game since CS1.5. Assuming I don't get caught up watching Always Sunny In Philly I'll be achievement whoring it up for the new Heavy update.

Lets not forget that games which do require some form of Pad, theres been millions of designs that most games work with fine. Xbox controllers are Windows Compatible, Racing Wheels etc for whoever prefers those games.

and you still have mouse/keyboard available.
