Equestrian only there because it's old.

They should cut out all the stupid cycling variations. You only need one or two cycling events.

Kayaking seems pretty stupid.

Rhythmic gymnastics aka dancing.

Beach volleyball is dumb.

I'd like rugby union to be included, because NZ would ace it. But a proper rugby tournament between heaps of teams takes like 6 weeks, so it wouldn't fit.

i was thinking that too. and i don't see anything wrong with beach volleyball, and the kayaking is actually pretty cool and looks fun, too.

as far as race walking, boxing and baseball (in their olympic forms i.e. BORING!), i'm not sure...

dumb sports -
most shooting events
ballroom dancing
walking
anything involving a horse
too many swimming/cycling events

should be:
skateboarding
wakeboarding/waterskiing/kitesurfing
lacrosse

I don't think ballroom dancing and walking are in the olympics.....are they?

should be:
skateboarding
wakeboarding/waterskiing/kitesurfing
lacrosse

The first two will never make it. They're way too "out there" for the olympics. But snowboarding is an olympic sport now, so maybe I'm wrong.

And I don't know how much lacrosse is played outside of North America, which is the reason baseball and softball are being dropped. If lacrosse was added, maybe Canada would actually win some summer olympic medals.

less shooting events, no sychronised swimming, less/no boxing, less judo, less sailing, no taekwondo, less wrestling

Pretty sure dancing isn't but walking is.

SkaRobotArmy

idk, i heard about something about them adding dancing to the summer games, maybe it never happened.

they are dropping baseball? thats ridiculous...
idk, i know lacrosse isn't that big everywhere else but in my 3 months in germany i have seen as many kids play it here as i have in canada. i think its as legit as having hockey or cricket (i know they dont) or curling.

if windsurfing and sailing are, why not kitesurfing? its more technical and as of recently they fly faster than some smallcraft.

skateboarding won't be because of the associated culture.

Don't see the big deal. Most of these people hardly get any sort of public appraisal apart from the Olympics, most don't even get much pay, so any kind of public appearance that's out of the obvious singular events make a lot of sense to me. I love shooting, I love archery, I love it all really, I think the equestrian is marvelous. I'd never get to see these sports if it weren't for the Olympics and I greatly appreciate that.

Lacrosse is becoming fairly popular in Europe and is coming on strong in Australia. It's akin to the sport's popularity on the US west coast in a lot of areas. It's way more relevant than table tennis and all those other sports that get dom'd by China. It would generate much more revenue for the host country to have lacrosse as well.

I agree with whoever mentioned jai alai too.

Alf™
08-20-2008, 03:49 PM
Softball is out of the next Olympics, but that sucks after seeing last nights Australia vs. Japan womens bronze match. That was epic.

Dr. Jake Destructo
08-20-2008, 03:54 PM
I hate how the IOC thinks individual sports are more relevant than team sports. At least it seems that way because they keep taking away things like baseball and softball and don't even consider American football or rugby. Team sports are way more fun to watch than Michael Phelps racing a green stripe.

Alf™
08-20-2008, 03:56 PM
Baseball is a good thing to take away. Most countries don't send there proper teams anyway, and Olympics isn't for second-rate competitions.

Why would American football be considered?

Maybe rugby, that is probably in the same boat as cricket.

Swimming is the best part of the Olympics, after that I don't watch much. I'd rather watch the X-games because it suits my ADHD a little better. :)

I'd wanna see football (American football) too, but i tihnk they can't do it because the games have to be spaced further apart. each team probably couldnt play more than once a week, which would mean 2 or 3 games for each team

MattSharpIsCool
09-02-2008, 01:10 AM
i think its as legit as having hockey

Well that's different, since NHL players go to the olympics. Canada only has 1 gold medal in the last 50+ years, so it's not like they dominate.

And American Football....in the olympics? The keyword there is "American". Canada plays it, I'm sure Mexico plays it, and I've heard it's gaining popularity in Britain, but it would be pointless to include it.

Yeah, a problem with that sport is that it isn't played professionally by enough countries to include it. Thats one of the reasons why Rugby isn't included and Rugby has a lot of countries playing internationally at pro level...just not enough.

Collis
09-07-2008, 05:36 PM
It's quite simple really. Every sport where an Olympic gold medal is the most sought after prize. You get things like football (soccer, w/e) and tennis where the biggest prize is the World Cup and grand slams respectively ... they shouldn't be allowed into the Olympics. Take Andy Murray for example, he was extremely lacklustre in Beijing, and now he is into the US Open final. I wouldn't be surprised if he just wanted to get out of China ASAP. And I don't blame him.

And whoever said cutting down the amount of cycling events, I agree. As much as I hate to say it though, because it would mean a huge shortage of medals for GB.

YDload
09-07-2008, 06:12 PM
thats a pretty good point. if an olympic medal isnt the highest prize you can hope to attain, then the sport shouldnt be there. i mean, that's one way of thinkin about it

Hah, I can say the same about Amit. It's a name, albeit surname.
