After watching some of Wooten's videos on youtube it started thinking about different techniques that bass players use with their right hand (or left hand if you're left handed) I was wondering what different techniques that you guys use when playing as I wanted to learn a four finger technique to get some fast runs going.

So any of you got any useful right hand techniques for fast runs and certain rhythms etc..

4 finger techniques arent worth the time. its much easier to play fast with two fingers, or double thumbing.

I agree

Most music is totally playable with two fingers, that's why it's the standard. Even Wooten does the majority of his stuff with i m and double thumbing.

If you want to play some bassnerd stuff though, you could try rmi (see John Myung) or rmit/timr (see Matthew Garrison). I think he goes from thumb to ring but I find it easier to do it the other way.

I use 2 fingers most of time. Sometimes 3 fingers, ala Billy Sheehan when playing faster stuff. I like to slap once in a while and tap just for shi*s and giggles. Double thumping is not very useful IMO unless you are Victor Wooten.

Since i learnt a 3 finger method it feels weird to use two fingers even when playing at slow speeds.

Has anyone managed to do a double thump with two pops after it like wooten does?

i whole heartedly disagree. anyone can find a use for any technique if they take the time. and i've yet to hear someone with 2 fingers play something that Victor Wooten or Matthew Garrison can get going with just double thumb and two fingers

What about Marcus Miller? Power is a good example of how you can use it just for fills.

I'm kinda tired of the double thumbing stereotype people have associated with Wooten. You don't HAVE to do thirty second notes at 230bpm when you double thump. You can do it for a different tone, or if you're for example playing a slap line and you want to do a run that you can only normally do with your fingers, it's much easier to just double thumb it than switch to fingers then back again.

If you can't use it tastefully it's your own problem. This isn't directed at you Dave :P

I've seen a guy that instead of leading index and then going to middle he leads ring and alternates ring/index until he needs speed, and then he does ring/middle/index.

You CAN make sound any way you want. The question is whether you SHOULD. gg

Touche.
My point though is that double thumping can sometimes be very hard to apply in the band situation and is not for everyone.
I used to practice double thumping a lot. I have all Victor Wooten's instructional videos. In the end, I realized that I wouldn't be able to use it much unless I just mess around on the bass by myself. It is a fun technique though.

:P

That's exactly what I think about the double thump, it can be used well instead of just for playing really fast, Its a good alternitive to a pick as well

first off thumb and 2 fingers, would be 3 finger technique, not 4, i dont know why you are bringing that up. and do you really want to make a blanket statement justifying any technique?

Hahaha, that's going to be a five-minute album. :p

We're doing something different for our next release. I think might enjoy it.

five minute segments is all i can deal with without getting so pissed off at the terrible over-use of auto-tune and the lack of singing ability that i cry for hours.
