i have some weakened enamel but no cavities as far as i can tell. i haven't been to the dentist since i got my wisdom teeth out almost 2 years ago.

i got them out at the local dentist's who can't knock you out so they just froze me and i was fully conscious throughout the sounds of tearing flesh and drilling/cracking teeth, the blood squirting out of my mouth, the pushing and pulling on my head, etc. was a unique experience.

when i was in band class some kids took the teacher's little stuffed animal that he always had at the front of the class and he was freaking out about it and then they made this really lame video about it's travels around the world where they just had a picture of the eiffel tower and dangled the stuffed animal infront of it, etc. and it was so lame but it was band class so 95% of the kids were rolling on the floor laughing about it.

I did that for the entire school year, except I took pictures of the stuffed yellow M&M dude our teacher had in various situations showing impending doom. With the pictures, I included a ransom note, demanding perfect scores for each student in our class after every test.

It got a rise to the degree that she sent her aides to spy on the class and get information. Lol. She still has the pictures and notes framed and hanging on her wall.

Good times in high school.

Akira
08-12-2008, 12:31 AM
Do you guys think a broken knob will keep people from bidding on a pedal on eBay?

Depends on the price. People certainly won't pay near what they would pay for one in better condition.

Look, the Casual is slow, and people who do post in here just post randomly. There's no guarantee real questions will be addressed. If you want an active forum more likely to actually provide you with information related to bass, head over to Talkbass or something.

Sablate McNuff
08-12-2008, 12:32 AM
Sorry man, passed right over it.

Generally, bass-related questions aren't answered in the casual.

But to answer your question:
No, if it's just the knob.
If it's a simple wire problem on the pot, try to fix it with soldering.
Otherwise, yes.

blacklungfever
08-12-2008, 12:32 AM
Oh no all 17 of them! That's like, so many! Lol. Anyways, people will still probably bid. Depends on the problem exactly though. If it's just the knob part, doesn't matter. If the knob's function is messed, then yes its a problem.

I'm really excited to start university. Really really excited.

i'll be working in the skills class with the physically/mentally handicapped students as an education assistant. in my entire district consisting of 7 schools, there is 1 other male doing what i will be doing. so after this year i could have my pick at any school in the district and they will basically pay me what i ask because the demand is so high. i have dealt extensively with the lady who is hiring me's son through some extremely heavy stuff at my current job so she knows how i handle tough situations and for the last 10 months has been asking me to work at the school for her and i finally gave in when she raised the pay to way more than i make now.

That sounds awesome. Amazing set. Too bad no Wolf At The Door.

Yeah... that's a pretty awesome song.

I was pumped that they played In Rainbows in its entirety, though. I heard basically everything I hoped for, except "How to Disappear Completely" which is basically my favorite Radiohead song.

Songs like "There, There" and "Paranoid Android" were great to hear live, though. I love "There, There" because they get everyone except Thom and Johnny playing drums.

One thing I loved though, that really clinched the atmosphere of the show, was at the end of the first encore when they played "Karma Police." The rest of the band had walked off stage, but Thom stayed on, strumming his acoustic and singing "For a minute there, I lost myself" and 35,000 people sang along with him. It was pretty chilling.

Hands down the best show I've ever been to, and probably will go to for a long time.

Sablate McNuff

Dream Theater is such a shame. The guys are each massively talented technically, but they can't write songs.

To be fair, their entire genre of music is full of bands of equal songwriting inability.

The whole concept behind their style is to write long rock compositions that are completely formulaic in nature, both rhythmically and technically. It's almost a classical approach to music, which makes sense, given their musical backgrounds. They try too hard to pull off decent music by using (and over-using) uncommon/odd time signatures...as well as ungodly long songs...

It's at this point that the technical side takes over and the feel is lost. That's why there are few bands that can pull off using uncommon time signatures, because it's hard to keep a sense of feeling and direction in a progressive way, while still making the song **relatively** short enough to keep the listener entertained.

Win A Rabbit
08-13-2008, 02:37 AM
dream theater is almost bearable until the vocals come in.

burtonbassist_101
08-13-2008, 02:49 AM
really though, it's all a matter of opinion.

people say that they don't play "with feeling" or whatever. since when does playing complex music automatically mean that you can't feel it? maybe that's the way that they CAN express themselves.

and personally, when they're rapidly filing through many different time signatures, i definitely can feel it. it might not be the same kind of feeling as in some smooth r&b song with a funky bassline or whatever, but i can definitely GROOVE (for lack of a better word) to it. case in point? the instrumental section to sacrificed sons. they set up a KILLER groove when switching between 15/16 and 4/4, occasionally throwing a 3/8 bar in there.

just because YOU can't feel what they're playing, doesn't mean that a) they can't or b) nobody else can either.

and as james labrie goes, at first i couldn't stand him either, but now after listening to them for a while, his vocals have grown on me, and i actually like them.

Has anyone ever picked up radio signals through a guitar amp before? I mean I hope that's what it is. At band practice the other day we hooked up a bunch of effects to one guitar and just started pissing about getting some pretty demonic noises out of it. Then when it came to unplug it,for like a two second period voices were definitely coming out of the amp. I'm hoping it's radio signals or something, but where we practice is next to a ****ing huge graveyard. Either way that mind ****ed us a bit thinking it could have been like voices from the grave or something.

Hahaha did this the other day.

I plugged the output of my compression pedal into the input of an ancient Peavy TNT, then ran a lead from the input to another random socket into the amp. Then I removed the lead end a little from the amps input and I started getting music playing out of the speaker. Coolest **** ever.

I don't have any need to read at the moment. I learn pretty much everything by ear, I compose in a mix of tab and my own shorthand (or on my computer), and there are much more efficient ways to communicate with the people I'm currently playing with.

No, we're not. You don't just "get into" session work. It's not that easy. You'll have to start small and work your way up - that is, if you're good enough and have the networking and business skills. I'd be prepared to play any style, own lots of gear, and be able to sightread a black page at first glance. That said most people who think they are capable of becoming a session musician are dreaming. You're welcome for shattering your dream.

But if you do want to try, start with friends and don't bring your 8 string.

I don't have any problem with people making a living through music. But most people who try fail.

i don't appreciate idiotic sensitivity. i appreciate hard work and dedication to music. not money.

black flag playing shows for 10 years without making a dime = respect.

stu hamm getting paid 200 dollars/hour for teaching kids how to play crappy sounding versions of old TV shows nobody cares about = not respect.

Yeah, but Stu Hamm's making 200 dollars/hour four teaching kids how to play crappy sounding versions old of TV shows nobody care about. I don't think he cares if you respect him. :p

Honestly, if you could make a living off your music, wouldn't you?

nope. and i say this all the time. why do you think my album is free? i don't want money for my music. music should be available to everybody, free of charge.

involving the prospect of "money for your music" will automatically start making your art worse. it will eventually destroy it completely. i have a life outside my musical persona.

art is what i do when im not making money.

What made you change your mind? You used to try to sell your stuff.

i came to this position while recording the symphonic cycle, which of course became 5,000 years alone, after realizing i needed to stop kidding myself and stay consistent to my philosophy. yeah, paying for music is bad until it comes to your music? nah, i don't think so. i want people to hear me i don't want them to pay me.

not only is that arrogant beyond measure but lmao it is a complete contradiction of every founding principle of my raayl persona.

I was just listening to an interview with Willie Nelson where he said the same thing.

Ditto.

When I was in a band, I could care less if we made any bit of money for the show. All I wanted to make was enough to get a Grand Slam Breakfast afterwards and enough gas to get back home.

If somebody is going to offer me money for my music though, I wont say no. It would be insulting them to say no.

if i could ever live somewhat comfortably as a musician (enough money to pay for gas to get from town to town, enough money to eat alright, enough money to record every now and then) i wouldn't ask for any more. as long as i could break even (or not lose too much money), that would be just fine for me.

lmao. well to be honest willie nelson doesn't necessarily "live the high life" regardless of how much capital he earns. that+he's spent what....40 years traveling around with nothing but a guitar and some weed?

well yeah it would be kind of insulting. the point im trying to make is i'm not going to ask for money. there isn't any money in recorded music anyways.

and for the live, touring act: enough money to pay for gas and food is all you need.

Sorry, the first part of that post was directed at Joel.<br><br>I understand that I wouldn't just be able to hop into it, but I really didn't even know where to start. I know that my skills as a musician are not even where they'd need to be to do much more than jam with a good friend once a year. It just would be a nice way to get some extra money and do something that I love, and that is to play bass.<br><br>I don't think my 8-string will have any practical use aside from playing out solo or my own personal recordings. In any band situation, I play my Schecter 6. It always has and always will be my go-to bass.<br><br>Speaking of which, how's the D-tuner treating you, Matt?<br>

Anyone on this board thinking they could get regular employment from even a semi-pro studio is naive.

Jamming around with friends is a different story, though. Try to tap into independent home studios, or start one of your own.

The detuner works fine although it still comes back sharp. I havn't tried to fix it yet, though.

I'm not sure you caught me there, it wasn't an underhanded statement. He really doesn't write radio friendly music, although he has performed a few hits but they were typically duets.
