That's a poor stance to have. It's entertaining music until you've heard every band that makes it. There are some bands that do it really well and are even timeless. Operation Ivy, for example, though they're not traditional ska at all.
woah i must have been out of it with that last post.
live, ska is fun music and great to dance to, but it doesnt hold up upon re listens at home.

no one has mentioned Mustard Plug or the Aquabats but those are two pretty essential ska bands, rating highly on a scale from 0 to ska... and also KITH (Kicked In The Head) is another ska influenced band that is really good and i would recommend checking them out too (if only just the song Tidal Wave... seriously get that song its amazing)

Ska may not hold up to scornful criticisms in the realm of academic criticism and music journalism, but it's easily the greatest form of music for a live show; next to Jazz. Ska was born on the road and stays alive there as well. Despite my critical instinct, I still adore ska and occasionally find myself listening to a lot of it. What ska needs is stronger song-writers. MUCH stronger song-writers. It's easy to see how big of a difference an experimentation on the formula can have on the music when juxtaposing the likes of Tomas Kalnoky to the rest of the scene. Some bands find it to be their prerogative to stick to easy and catchy music; and that's perfectly fine and shouldn't be condemned.

all you really need in the ska area is Streetlight Manifesto - Somewhere in the Between

Ska blows.
This.
Taking an immense **** on reggae, dub, etc. The difference between any two ska bands are nuanced at best. If I wanted to listen to somebody talk about guns, girls, drugs, etc. over a monotonous, obnoxious instrumental track I would just listen to reggaeton.

if anybody wants to listen to a dull, monotonous and obnoxious idiot talk about his terrible opinions on music, catharsis is always up for a chat.

i hate ska but if i had to listen to it i'd rather put on a record at home because i don't like being surrounded by complete cunts. yes, all listens of ska are cunts.

Streetlight, and pretty much anything else that Kalnoky does is good, but 80s 2 tone is the best

i find that the production on the specials isnt great, which is a bit tiresome.
What cd was it?

The Specials aren't that good. Melt Banana covered one of their songs, that version was more like it.
