What kind of finish is it? Presumably its a lacquer or some kind for the clear coat, but is it stained or anything underneath?

If it's a lacquer and stain, it's going to be very difficult to get rid of it. The stain penetrates into the shell to a certain degree. Its going to take alot of sanding and a good paint stripper, and by then, who knows what damage you'd do to the shell. What have you got?

refinishing a wrapped finish is easy enough as taking a hairdryer to the seam of the wrap, peel up carefulyl and remove. (of course, all hadware is to be removed)

if it is a stain underneath the lacquer but your planning on painting it a solid colour then I would take some 40 grit sandpaper to the shells until you've removed the lacquer, then go ahead and paint. if its a solid paint job underneath the lacquer then sand with 40 grit untill everything is removed, then finish however you like.

What kind of finish are you hoping to do?

it has a stain underneath.

i was hopeing to get a stained wood finish when i was done.

would that not work for something that has already been stained.

I wouldn't try it. Stain soaks into the grain, you'll end up sanding off the outter ply before you get all of the stain gone.

Exactly what I was trying to say.

some automotive paint. tbh itll be a lot of work and itll be hard to get close to a factory finish. plus to do a good job youll prolly want some painting tools too. unless you want to just use a spray can.

Why do you want to change the finish you've got? If it's a laqcuer stain, it must be decent. If you're bored with it, sell it and buy something new. All you're going to do by trying to refinish it is de-value it and ruin the kit. Its one thing to remove a wrap from a cheap kit and re-stain the wood underneath, but you're looking at ruining what's already probably a decent looking kit.
