Rock drumming in particular is very energetic, and to add to this, these guys are playing in a hot environment - you'll see them literally dripping with sweat.

well, this is what happens everytime I'm rehearsing with my band. last time my guitarist put on a pullover while I was sweating with my whole body.

Yeah. I get shattered when we run thru our full set, mainly cause am puttin like 110% into to and tryin to nail all the showmanship stuff in practice so I know I can do it live(nothin worse than tryin to be a showman live n failing)

DrummerJonny
07-22-2008, 11:42 AM
yeaa, some of my showman stuff isnt practical in the studio...

like the recent one of setting my sticks on fire as we finish our set, for an outdoor gig we did recently.

but i'm playing fast punk all night so its 110% or nothing...

Ha, definitely posted that on facebook. Great article. Great study too - it's true that musicians work their asses off, and not many people are hip to that. I attended a lecture by a doctor who deals specifically with musicians, who said that "Musicians are truly the top atheletes of micro muscles." Just rather than lifting weights or running like the wind, a drummer has extremely agile and coordinated limbs, and a trumpet player has the potential to inflate a bike tire with nothing but his lungs and face.

hahaha, just found this... i'm guessing this was the bit where i snapped my stick and threw it mid set...

Yea. With my old band's old practice space, we had no heat asides from a tiny-*** space heater, and most of the door and windows weren't air tight. So come winter time, we'd all come in with big heavy jackets and hats and whatnot. But the end of a practice, I usually ended up in a t-shirt.

Now, granted those practices were often hour long jams, followed by another hour long jam and finished off by running through some songs. But yea, for live shows that aren't that long, I'd still get just as hot if not more because I try to move around more and put on a decent show, as opposed to sitting like a rock. :p

I really don't think drumming is as physically demanding as the article places it. Proof: a lot of professional drummers are rather large.

Sponer
07-23-2008, 08:47 PM
well, all professional football players are rather large.

but yea, a football player would probably try and kick my *** if i told him sitting on a throne and hitting things with sticks was as physically demanding and running around tackling people.

Cheungman

i think the football they are talking about is Soccer.

that's because drumming isn't a specialized workout designed to kill fat. think of the parst of your body you use to play drums. wrists, forearms, fingers, ankles, legs, etc. now, what usually gets fat? midsection. have you ever seen a drummer with huge flabby arms or fingers or anything? no.

Aaron
07-25-2008, 01:25 AM
Wrong. You can't target areas of your body with weight loss. Just like your neck isn't the only part of your body that gets drunk if you drink alcohol, you don't just loose weight off your arms when you lift weight. It's all linked; sit up, you use all the muscles in your body in some way; play drums, you use all the parts of your body too. Think about all the major muscle groups and tell me one that you don't use in a 20 minute drumming session..

Cheungman
07-25-2008, 09:38 AM
^ Like aaron said, you can't target fat burning. It's systematic. Yes i have seen drummers with flabby arms, they would be part of that large group i was talking about.
