View Full Version : Subgenres
See poll above. Note that site stats show that only .5% of total page views are given to the subgenre pages. My initial thought is that they're additional and unneeded complexity, but feel free to disagree and tell me before I axe them.

I like the complexity personally, but you can get rid of them if you want to.

As a regular user of the site I enjoy them. However if I was a casual user I don't think I'd give two poops

I don't want to vote because I don't really agree with either. I think they are great for classification when you're looking at a band you don't know, but I also think that they should be displayed more prominently. So as Neo said, revamp them.

A revamp would be good
I vote for more subgenres but removal (or revamping) of subgenre pages.

The problem with subgenres is that they get deleted everytime somebody edits a band. So they're effectively useless.
oh sweet did not know that
let's get rid of band edits!

this seems like the most economical solution to sputnikmusic's problem.

the title's all yours
wait does being a faggot scout make you a faggot?
anyways, while i don't really use the subgenres i'm not sure if added complexity is a good enough reason to get rid of them. Though overall it doesn't seem like people would care that much if they no longer existed

I would think that fewer subgenres would be helpful for people who are looking for new music, but don't really know what the difference is. Black Metal... Death Metal... Power Metal... WHAT'S IT MEAN!?!?! The "similar artists" listing on most band pages would make up for having numerous subgenres, as do the listings of "Members Also Liked" in each review.

as has been said, the pages aren't all too useful, but I think we need them in regards to proper classification. So a revamp would be a good idea, though I'm unsure what way it could be done.

They don't need to be removed, they just need to be overhauled somehow. As others have mentioned, they're fairly useless as they stand. Genre descriptions would be a nice addition.

Wait wait wait, subgenres as in like the 'Secondary Genre' page you fill out on the Edit Band page?

I think, if given more prominence and importance, it can be a good tool for people to discover more music and to give some reviews that may have been buried under the carpet more attention. So if a revamp would be the solution, then I think the sub-genres pages can be used greatly if utilized better.
Wait wait wait, subgenres as in like the 'Secondary Genre' page you fill out on the Edit Band page?
Not quite. When you click on a genre (e.g. Home / Metal / Punk / Indie / Rock etc.), you are taken to the genre page. From there, on the right-hand panel, are specific subgenres. You click those to arrive at the subgenre pages. We are saying that those particular pages don't have much value; alternatively, they can be revamped somehow.

Oh right right, I always use the 'Other' page's subgenres, but never really for any of the other ones. I think they could be reworked a little bit.
