Our Band Could Be Your Life: Scenes from the american Indie Underground 1981-1991 - Michael Azerrad

This is a book, has anyone read it? If not I think it's something a lot of you might enjoy. It's a lot of stuff that your probably familliar with, but it gives a really good insight into the period and how various types of punk and indie evolved. Within the book there are 13 chapters which profile (in order)...

Black Flag, the Minutemen, Mission of Burma, Minor Threat, Husker Du, The Replacements, Sonic youth, Butthole Surfers, Big Black, Dinosaur Jr, Fugazi, Mudhoney, Beat Happening

You might not be interested in all of those bands specifically, but reading each chapter shows how things progressed and I found it fascinaitng reading about Minor Threat and the straight edge stuff. Anyway, it's probably on amazon or something if you're interested.

About 95% of this forum has probably read it.

I've not though, need to read through some other books first.

Don't want to be in that 5% Derek, what are you reading?

The Atrocity Exhibition
A Scanner Darkly
On the Road

When I finish all those 3, I'll buy Our Band Could Be Your Life eventually.

Yeah that's a really great book. I love how the whole culture is connected, like how the guitarist from Yo La Tengo begs Dinosaur Jr to turn down their amps because they have great songs buried underneath.

This book and High Fidelity should be required reading or something on here.

the buttholes surfers are a bunch of giant assholes which turned me off of their already pretty shitty music.

those are all good, thumbs upppp.

Our Band Could Be Your Life is a great read. My favourite music book by some distance, although I've still to read a few that interest me, one in particular about post-punk which I can't remember the name of. "Japrocksampler" by Julian Cope is a good book about the roots of Japanese psychedelic rock.

I'm currently reading "A Maze of Death" by Philip K Dick which I almost finished in one read yesterday. I'll finish it tonight. I'm actually reading an awful lot just now, more than ever. Library deadlines are good for coercing me to read in isolation when I'd otherwise do something stupid - ie socialise.

I'd rather get my balls ripped off with a plier than read this worthless piece of fecal matter for a book. Why base what I want my band like off some band in some stupid scenic book when punk rock is already dead? Lame as shi if you ask me.

I havn't read it, but Neil McCormick's 'I Was Bono's Doppelganger' is one hell of a book if no one's read it yet. Just about one of Bono's best friends who also dreamed of starting a band and making as a mega star, only see his best friend do it as he withered away.

i never cared for their music and the way they acted didn't make me want to listen to them more. i just didn't find them amusing/funny/interesting just seemed like a bunch of guys doing drugs and destroying things, sweet.

You want to finish those.

I read this book awhile ago. It was a good read, and encouraged me to check out bands that I had previously not heard of, but found out I needed in my life on a regular basis.

they were revolting against an oppressively 'hipster' scene by just being absolutely ridiculous.

they are awesome as ****.

Butthole Surfers don't really have a lot of substance in their music.

It's like, wierdness and nothing to back it up.

Still good though.
