The Bible does not explicitly say masturbation is a sin, fyi.

It depends how you interpret Onan.
Regardless though, Christian doctrine frowns on sexual gratification in general.

And in appendium:
2396 Among the sins gravely contrary to chastity are masturbation, fornication, pornography, and homosexual practices.
2353 Fornication is carnal union between an unmarried man and an unmarried woman. It is gravely contrary to the dignity of persons and of human sexuality which is naturally ordered to the good of spouses and the generation and education of children. Moreover, it is a grave scandal when there is corruption of the young
1755 A morally good act requires the goodness of the object, of the end, and of the circumstances together. An evil end corrupts the action, even if the object is good in itself (such as praying and fasting "in order to be seen by men").
The object of the choice can by itself vitiate an act in its entirety. There are some concrete acts - such as fornication - that it is always wrong to choose, because choosing them entails a disorder of the will, that is, a moral evil.
1853 Sins can be distinguished according to their objects, as can every human act; or according to the virtues they oppose, by excess or defect; or according to the commandments they violate. They can also be classed according to whether they concern God, neighbor, or oneself; they can be divided into spiritual and carnal sins, or again as sins in thought, word, deed, or omission. The root of sin is in the heart of man, in his free will, according to the teaching of the Lord: "For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, fornication, theft, false witness, slander. These are what defile a man." But in the heart also resides charity, the source of the good and pure works, which sin wounds.
The second to last one esspecially.

Onan spilled his seed because he didn't want to commit incest. It wasn't wasting sperm that was his sin anyway, it was his failure to obey God.
There. This thread now lacks purpose.

Because it was explicitly spoken to say that fornication is bad, chastity is good, but if you can't be chaste, at least marry before you ****

Onan was killed because he didn't follow instructions. Nowhere in the text is it implied that what he did was wrong, aka the only thing he did wrong according to the text is that he did not have proper coitus with Tamar.

So even sexual gratification between two married peoples (the way the Bible says it should be) is frowned upon?
Sorry I just don't follow...mostly because its just not true. If you don't believe me, I encourage you to read the book of Song of Songs, possibly the most erotic reading you'll do in a while.

Plus the only people who really believe what Das is saying were people like Martin Luther and John Wycliffe and everyone who was dead by the 20th century.

Thats the Catholic outlook :)
no it isn't
sex without the intent to create offspring is a sin because it's a waste of semen and a waste of potential life this is why contraceptives aren't acceptable within the church
sex between married people is perfectly acceptable just not if you're going to manipulate the outcome with the use of birth control
i personally am all for condoms though even though i'm catholic because i loves me some sinful premarital sex and i definitely am not ready nor am i sure i will ever be ready to have children
Der Übermensch

The primary purpose of sex must always be for procreation, and any joy taken from it must be secondary. (see 1755 from the Catechism)

only idiots take literal interpretations from the bible or the catechism and the same can be said for those who assume that all catholics do so
Der Übermensch

I know most catholics don't. and i know the bible isn't explicit.
The catechism says u must do it for the end, not the means.
and only an idiot would try to prove otherwise :)
Iscariot
05-26-2008, 01:46 AM
i'm not trying to prove that the catechism says differently i'm just saying it's a very outdated piece of literature and like 99% of catholics outside of the priesthood don't adhere to it because it's an entirely irrelevant piece of text in the 21st century

Now that we know that males produce semen at the same rate no matter how often they ejaculate and unused sperm is just reabsorbed, is masturbation still a sin?
Volumnius Flush
05-26-2008, 02:05 AM
Catholicism does not equal Christianity. We must remember this. However the Protestant movement of the 16th century did have this in common with the Catholic church, that is, the interpretation of the appropriateness of sex, of any kind.

personally i don't think masturbation should be practically considered a sin
i can completely understand why it's interpreted as such but it's such an outdated ideal
in regards to onan - at the time in which the story takes place, it was considered a personal insult to have sex with a woman without utilizing your sperm because for a woman to be barren or to simply be barred from having children was an attack against her character and her ability to fulfill her duties as a female
it wasn't so much the spilling of the seed that was immoral as the attack against her personal character
however the catechism as has been said takes a different interpretation so it's validity as a sin is really up in the air

You still miss the point. Obviously you didn't read the story. He was commanded to perform coitus with Tamar and he did not complete his task; thus, he was killed.
And respond to my point about Catholicism not equaling Christianity. Or Das can it doesn't matter. He was the one making the argument anyway.
I find it hilarious when in a discussion on Christian theology someone pulls out the Catholic Catechism  Catholicism is a religion all of its own. Take necromancy for example, definately not Christian.
