up until 3-4 years ago, christopher walken was mr. bad guy.
for the most part, morgan freeman is usually the wise and journeyed good guy.
bad guy: jason isaacs
good guy: adam sandler, tom hanks, george clooney, julia roberts, clint eastwood (more anti-hero but meh), leonardo dicaprio...

Yeah now he's going into "cooky or sympathetic old guy"

It's ironic because his big break was playing a vicious pimp in Street Smart.
bad guy: jason isaacs
The only thing I ever saw him in is The Patriot.

Yeah, those are good picks, though Hanks played a villain in The Ladykillers. And Julia Roberts in Confessions of a Dangerous Mind.

isaacs is that malfoy guy in the harry potter series, casting people just love his sneer. he's also the bad guy on the showtime series, brotherhood.

i guess your choice of words somewhat confused me, because i don't really see "hero" and "non-antagonist" as the same thing. but i guess i would agree he generally is typecast as innocent young males.

Not in Lucky Number Slevin, I was surprised to see him get owned.

Villains:
Joe Pesci (Goodfellas, Casino (though he's retired now))
Michael Madsen (Reservoir Dogs, Kill Bill Vol. 1 & 2, Donnie Brasco)
I'm becoming a fan of Michael Madsen lately, he's a really good actor. He's great at playing a tough guy villain, but I'd like to see him use that tough guy style and play, like, a real anti-hero.

Michael Madsen rocks it old school style. He'd be great as a film noir protagonist.
Benecio Del Toro makes a great villain, but he's had an eclectic career.
Oh I think Michael Wincott is pretty much a typecast villain...
James Woods also has always been better in villain roles.

I always thought Robin Williams did a great job in one hour photo, so him.
call me ****ing crazy, but I think if done right, Will Ferrel would make an amazing psychopath.

Speaking of a guy that's been typecast.
Comedians are usually interesting when they do darker material. Dennis Leary started out giving good villain performances in bad movies.
Larry David should play one sometime :p
Ahnold - good guy (Predator, Terminator 2 and 3, etc.)
Vin Diesel - Anti-Hero (XXX, Riddick)

Although he has had soo many parts its hard to generalize, most of Jack Nicholsons most prominent roles have been as a villain. Even if he isn't a villain in the traditional sense, he plays, at least, a less than pleasurable human being.

Alan Rickman too. Does anyone know any films where he hasn't narrowed his eyes and looked sneeringly evil? Even as Snape he was sort of an anti-hero

Marky mark played a questionable villain in The Departed. Maybe an anti hero.
Kevin Costner played a definite villain in Mr. Brooks.
Come on guys. These are both really recent movies.

i would say the villain camp was definitely damon/nicholson. and we all know how much sgt. dignam loved those two.
I was actually thinking about this yesterday when I saw a commercial for Hancock. Why does Will Smith almost always save the world in his movies?

Its hard to say. Everybody in that movie had a dark side, even DiCaprio arguably. That is one reason the movie was so cool. Wahlbergs part in that was similar to his part in Four Brothers. He was by no means a good person, but he was definitely in the right.

Whalberg played a villain in a few movies, including Fear.
Di Caprio has played a dark anti-hero in a few things, including Gangs of New York.

Tom Sizemore is good at that role. Too bad he's not getting as many roles as he used to due to being in and out of the slammer. I really liked him in Saving Private Ryan.
I was actually thinking about this yesterday when I saw a commercial for Hancock. Why does Will Smith almost always save the world in his movies?
Never noticed that before, I bet its because he's a pro at delivering witty one-liners

All the more reason to give him the villain spot in an action movie starring Bruce Willis...or maybe a James Bond film.
