Fricking AWESOME show. Drove 7 hours down to Saint Paul to see it. Totally worth it. Three was much better than expected... ridiculously tight. On that note, all the bands were ridiculously tight. There were hardly any screw-ups during the whole night... you could probably count the total number on your hands, possibly one.
Three... awesome sort of prog power... thing... it was awesome. Kinda reminded me of Coheed... but much more technical. Fun little drum battle between the drummer and percussionist, but the percussionist's cymbals were clamped TIGHT. It pained me whenever he hit them. Overall, the music was a little cliche... vocalist had some awesome solos (really... slap guitar? I dunno... it was fricking awesome), lead guitarist shredded... kinda sucked... good band overall, though. Pit was relatively full, but still spacious. Fun.
Between the Buried and Me... only played for 14 minutes. I'm not even joking. They hopped on, played, like, 2 songs (no pause), and then went off stage (in comparison, Three was on for over half an hour). They were, however, perfect. I mean... damn... so awesome... I love those guys. Crowd went nuts, pit got a little crowded but was still fun. Got a tiny circle pit going.
Opeth... was fricking awesome. I've got nothing else to say. New guitarist is awesome. Axe, imo, has finally found his place in the band. WAY better than the last time I saw him playing; definetely a lot more comfortable... actually like his playing now. No Lopez, but good. Pit... WAS THE WORST PIT I WAS EVER ****ING IN. No joke. I literally couldn't breathe... I nearly passed out from being crushed (and I'm a big guy...). Those guys didn't know how to mosh... the entire pit turned into "everyone get to the front no matter what... crush the little people!" After three songs I left the pit and joined my friends up on the second level (it was a nightclub, though, so I was still, like, only 50 feet from the stage... better view, tbh, and the music was a lot clearer).
Dream Theater........................................... ............................. ............. ........ ........... well............ frick........ it's Dream Theater! What else do you want me to say!? Petrucci looked like Jesus with long hair and a goatee. LaBrie looked much, much more gay than usual with long hair and a goatee. Petrucci was too loud and Myung was too quiet, but the music itself was epic. Portnoy lost more sticks in one song than I do in an entire gig... he does around 100x more tricks than I do, though. Honestly... they left all of us speechless. Pure mastery. I would give anything to be able to play half as well as any of them.
Oh, and Rudess had the greatest keytar ever.............. I need to find a picture of it.
Show was good.
Going to see Nightwish tomorrow, don't know who the supporting bands are.
This is a good week.

Yeah, man, I know what you mean. It pains me when bands skip my area (it's not so bad during the summer when I can travel a bit, but, like, during the school year... unless the band comes to Winnipeg [rare, tbh], I'm screwed).
The club they played at usually puts up photos of the gigs. I'll keep an eye on their webpage to see if they put any up... will make sure to share with you guys when/if they do.

But! This week...Steve Smith & Vital Information :D
yeah, thats quite a good lineup with ditto bands. I wonder what the deal is with BTBAM tho, maybe a member felt ill and wanted to shorten the set.

hehe im glad i saw btbam seperately. When i saw them, they played all of colors, then lost perfection and mordecai. So epic and tight.
I'm seeing opeth and 3 on the 24th without DT and BTBAM. I can't wait.

What songs did Opeth play? I'm curious to see if they played any of their heavier stuff or sticked to a Damnation + Ghost Reveries set. Sucks that BTBAM only played for a short period of time, I love their drummer's early work with Hamartia.

BTBAM live must be pretty orgasmic. Big shame they only played a couple of songs.

They only played one off of Damnation (In My Time of Need). I'm not very good at remembering songs bands play, but I'll try to remember everything they did. They played Heir Apparent off of their new CD (awesome, by the way... it's piratable... buying it once it's out \m/>_<\m/), but that was the only new one. They played The Drapery Falls off of Blackwater Park. That right there made my week.
:smoke:
Uuummm... frick... they played a few more. One of em might've been Baying of the Hounds... but I'm not 100% sure. Either way, it was a killer set.
My friends and I are hoping they come do a tour on their own. I would kill to watch a Lamentations-style set. I really, really would.
Overall, though, Opeth's set was very heavy. They had no trouble following BTBAM whatsoever.
Panopticon
05-14-2008, 12:25 PM
imo opeth out-heavies btbam any day of the week. Heir apparent is such an epic song.
Did they play bleak because i would probably cream if they play it when i see them.

I haven't heard any of Opeth's new stuff, I remember seeing them at Sounds of the Underground a few years back and they played The Grand Conjuration before Ghost Reveries came out, it was epic!
Oh and I think Opeth will play The Drapery Falls with like every set since they think it is the epitome of their work.
Panopticon
05-14-2008, 01:52 PM
idk they've openly admitted that demon of the fall is the most fun to play.
But yes the drapery falls is epic
Harrow
05-14-2008, 02:18 PM
I have some interview with Mikael and Lindgren, they were saying that Drapery is responsible for the change in how they wrote all their music after that. I wish they would play Demon of the Fall more that song is good. I've seen Opeth 5 times so far and not once have they played it, but they have played The Drapery Falls all 5 times >_<
Trembling Willows
05-14-2008, 02:25 PM
That seems really unusual.
They almost always play Demon of the Fall.
In fact i'm sure I read somewhere that Mike thought playing The Drapery Falls was actually good now, considering how he thought they hadn't rehearsed it with any kind of emotion since '01.

Those guys didn't know how to mosh... the entire pit turned into "everyone get to the front no matter what... crush the little people!"
I've seen Killswitch 3 times (I'm actually not even a huge fan, but that's not the point) and that's what happened every time. It's really freakin' annoying.
I started out in front, and Killswitch was last. The entire show, some douche kept try to squeeze his way infront of me. Then finally right when Killswitch went on and the whole crowd started moving, he shoved his arms in front of me, grabs the rail, and pushes me back. And that's basically what everyone else did too, or tried to do.
This is partially why I actually don't always like going to shows NEARLY as much as I like playing shows. Doesn't help that I'm like 5'10 and about 130 pounds.

I hate people who throw themselves round stupidly at shows n hurt others. All that does is spoil it for some people. And clockin in at 6'4 and bout 250 lbs i'm usually the one who has to stand behind people (usually lasses) to stop em gettin totalled by fools.

It's true... moshing is retarded. I personally like Dave Grohl's response. "Why don't you stop beating the **** out of each other and actually have a good time. I hear there's this new thing, it's called dancing. You should all try it." Honestly I can't stand General Admission concerts anymore, 'cause there's always a bunch of stupid, sweaty smelly kids moshing and a bunch of little 14 year olds pushing as hard as they can to get to the barricade. I usually wind up covered in someone else's B.O. and black makeup/hair dye. Awful.
Harrow
05-15-2008, 02:09 PM
There is a difference between dancing and going there to hurt people. It's the tools that go to these shows to beat the crap out of others that ruin it for everyone, not necessarily the kids that are "moshing".
Motleyguy
05-15-2008, 02:15 PM
The kids that are moshing just annoy me. I always wind up getting hit in the face by some *** clown with a studded bracelet who's swinging his obscurely long, lanky arms around in a windmill fashion. I don't know how moshing can be considered dancing either. There is no way it can possibly follow a rhythm (unless it's a circle pit, or that slamdancing, karate moshing stuff).

Well normally I don't mind the pit. But there are just certain bands (Killswitch is one) that instead of just moving around, everyone's goal is to shove their way as far to the front as they can.
It is nice to be able to just sit and enjoy shows as well though.

I elbowed a guy in the face once, he didnt really get the point so I just shrugged and made it look like a 'moshpit accident'. I have no problems with people pushing and shoving eachother around, but all that windmill/bad karate kicks crap is really sad.

Yeah... don't get slam-dancing confused with moshing. Moshing, honestly, is (should be) good natured fun. People slamming into each other, not with the intent of hurting one another, but just having a good time. Those mosh pits are the best. People don't get hurt in a proper pit. If someone falls, they get picked up; I've seen people get grabbed as they're falling and pulled back up. That's a proper pit. Not that lame-*** slam-dancing.
>_<
btw, saw Nightwish on Wednesday. FRICKING AMAZING!!! It was awesome... they spent a good ten minutes talking about hockey (over 3 breaks). But, serously, the music was epic. Anette, honestly, is a way better front(wo)man than Tarja was. Marco still has the greatest bass tone evar. Good show.

I am really ****ing pissed.
I got dropped off at my friends cousins appt in the city where they were getting ready. I got there at 5:45, when the doors opened for the show at 6, and it started at 7. His cousins were taking there sweet ****ing old time getting read, and there was major traffic in the city as always. So we just missed the first bus because his cousins had to get ****ing cigs, and then it took like 20 minutes to get to the venue.
We got there at 7:30, and missed 3. All i kept hearing all night was how amazing 3 was, and i payed 50 bucks for this ticket and i didn't even get to see them.
Anyway... the good aspects of the show.
BTBAM was absolutely outstanding. It was epic. They played Selkies, Prequal to the Sequal, and then Viridian into White walls. I couldn't have asked for a better set for them with only 30 minutes.
Opeth was just amazing. Their lead singer is a really cool guy.. this is my first time seeing them in show and he gets into it with the crowd. Just great music all around. They played The Leaper Infinity, The Baying of the Hounds, To rid the Disease, Deliverence, and another song that i didn't know.
Dream Theater was just great. James had something going on though.. he wasn't feeling it last night. But god damn... Portnoy and Petrucci... just awesome. Seeing Portnoy play live just makes me love him so much more. He is such a great showman, and just an amazing player. I was really hoping for a drum solo from him, but unfortunately no delivery. And Petrucci was on ****ing fire. I mean this is my first Dream Theater show but holy ****, he was crazy. The only songs i really knew were Take the Time and Octavarium. The rest were songs that i've heard but don't know the names of. It was also basically like 60% Petrucci guitar solo lol.
All in all, even with missing 3 the tickets were well worth it. But i still wish i could have seen them when i could have.
Edit- oh and in a mosh pit i slammed my funny bone on someones face, and my entire arm instantly became numb... and my ring and pinky fingers are still pins and needles.. is that normal for the day after with a really bad hit to the funny bone? (im just nervous that i damaged a nerve)

I hit my funny bone really hard on the corner of something a while back, and I felt a line go up my arm and into a couple fingers that got really numb and tingly, like you said. It only lasted like 10-15 seconds though, but I immediately thought I had damaged a nerve, too.
If it's really been a whole day and it still feels the same, you might want to get that checked out :\
