I like a couple things for ambient. Lots of ambient electronica, old space-rockish/electro stuff like Tangerine Dream, and some minimalist stuff is pretty ambient and pleasant.

I'm big on the likes of Jaaportit, Raison d'Etre and Desiderii Marginis for my top artists. Others include: Eluvium, Symbiosis, Brian Eno, Lustmord, Atrium Carceri, old Forest Silence demos and a lot more.

You could also try Skalpel, Tosca, Yonderboi, Koop, Zero 7, The Cinematic Orchestra, Kruder & Dorfmeister, Thievery Corporation and Bonobo.
Some time ago i also downloaded the "Erotic Lounge" series. The name's quite cheesy and it contains some suggestive songs, but on average it's quite nice. When my sleeping rhythm is messed up (again) and I'm tired in the afternoon, its lovely to take a nap with this music in the background as well :X

Many artists in this thread come closer to lounge.

When I hear lounge I think jazz before ambient...
Most of the stuff on Kranky is pretty good.
