View Full Version : The Strange Medical Conditions Thread

I consider this a world issue. It is an issue people deal with and the world is filled with people so it is as much of a world issue as AIDS or malaria, just not as rampant or common. You may be familiar with this but if your not, this might be an issue of great interest to you.
My thought here is that this could be a thread of great value to the forum where we can address medical issues or concerns and perhaps we can learn from each other.
Though this thread may be closed soon for lack of a contribution to the Sputnik society, my hope is that we can show each other strange diseases, disorders, and medical instances that we may have previously not known about.
So without further ado, I would like to share with you one disorder/condition I personally had never heard of until recently and one I thought was strange.
Prosopagnosia
Prosopagnosia (sometimes known as face blindness) is a disorder of face perception where the ability to recognize faces is impaired, while the ability to recognize other objects may be relatively intact. The term usually refers to a condition following acute brain damage, but recent evidence suggests that a congenital form of the disorder may exist. The specific brain area usually associated with prosopagnosia is the fusiform gyrus.
So now, share with me your zany new medical conditions. We can pretend this is a game and see who can come up with the most interesting medical conditions.

I can't beat that one. That is one strange medical condition alright!
I had an American accent (My mother, who lived in America for 20+ years, identified it as an almost Michigan sounding accent), I don't know the difference between states and accents, I just know what an American sounds like, so I don't know how accurate that is, but yeah :p
Funnily enough, about 4 weeks after I woke up, I went through an MRI machine and started to lose the accent slowly...
I do have a video of me in a very smashed up state speaking though.

I've always been suspicious of the English and Australians, like maybe their accents are fake. If you look at Hugh Laurie who plays House, M.D., he can turn it on and off which leads me to believe they can all turn it on and off.

Hugh Laurie creeps the **** out of me when he uses his real voice.
I don't have anything else to contribute sorry.
Wait, Chu, how did you come about being in a coma?
Car accident, I received massive head trauma, suffered a left haemoplegia, which meant I was paralysed on my left-side, coma for 2 months. etc.

I get formication in the heat. I think it's probably from my skin's occasional inability to sweat.

I have a condition that gives me a massive penis. I hope they don't find a cure.
Complete loss of muscle on the left side of my body kinda sucked alot, but yeah, slowly getting it all back (Actually, it's the reason I started playing guitar, and ultimately came to MX).
I dunno, I don't really notice a difference, although I don't remember much of life before the accident.
I'm told it's a pretty depressing subject, but I'm actually happy the accident happened, it has opened doors for me that otherwise wouldn't have been possible.
Plus, when put into the following context: I suffered brain damage when I was younger, I smoke a fair amount of marijuana, and do nothing, yet consistently score high results in my COMP classes at university (Approx. 74% of my class have scored lower than me on the MSE, and 2 assignments), it kinda makes me smile :)
Especially after how difficult high-school was with everyone telling me I wouldn't get anywhere in life...

You do realise that Australian and American accents actually originated from the British accent. If any accent is fake, it's yours and mine.

That's retarded. Things aren't fake because they're different from their progenitors.

I'm allergic to the guitar I play most. It's eaten away most of my 1st and some of my 2nd layers of skin. The worst is if I happen to over-do it and the next day I have a bunch of skin rips on my fingers and thumb

I never said they were fake, I was merely pointing out that what he said didn't make sense. And of course I don't think they're fake, I speak with an Australian accent.

Maybe it's the strings. Things like nickel allergies aren't uncommon.

It is the strings. I'm allergic to nylon or the coating they use. But you can't string a classical guitar with steel strings, it defeats the purpose. I played it unassumingly for the first year and a half then my hands got worse but I was at certain point of progress that I couldn't stop just yet. Anyway I played for another year after that until my hands started breaking out in little lesions.

Ya, I had an enormous brain hemorrhage about 7 years ago. It severely ****ed me up at the time but now it's hardly noticeable (there are still a few off-things about me but others don't really realize anything is wrong). Anyway, I think I suffer from FAS too. A lot of people say I sound British. Here's the funny part though. I was actually born in London and moved here when I was three. I had a semi-British accent then but before the incident I sounded 100% American. So basically I have a cover story conveniently set in place for me (because, of course, I don't like to tell people what happened).

I think that's called when your corpora cavernosa is filled with blood causing an erection. And it's totally normal.

I heard the thing about someone who had such a big penis that they passed out several times and then eventualy died as a result of their erection as a teenager. I thought it was a lie untill my freind studying medicine confirmed it. Glad i dont have that.

Imagine walking through the store having an erection that big. Then your teacher walks by and says, "Johnny what is that?"
"Oh Mrs. Wallace, hi, uhh, it's just a baseball bat. In my pants!"

Speaking of medical conditions... Does anyone know what virus causes hand, foot, and mouth disease? Please help me with this one. It is very important I find out soon.

Haven't you ever watched Blackadder goes Forth?
YOu really should, surprisingly his voice sounds quite natural there.
