I haven't been playing for too long, but I know my heads sound bad, so I am looking to replace them. What do you guys recommend?

This is my kit http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Pulse-5Piece-Kit-with-Cymbals?sku=443859
Not really good or fancy, but I really wouldn't have been able to pay for the more expensive stuff :-\

evans G2 coated heads on top, with G1's underneath, or even just the stock heads on the bottom if ur strapped for cash.

Coated double ply heads add warmth and roundness which is always useful on lower spec kits as they tend to sound a bit 'tinny' and lifeless.

thatd be my advice anyway.

You can't go wrong with Remo Ambassadors on the toms. Get coated ambassadors for the batter (top) side and clear for the resonant (bottom) sides.

The snare drum could also use a coated Ambassador on the top but a Diplomat on the bottom.

I'm unsure of what you should do for the kick drum. I like a SuperKick 1 made by Evans, but it's personal preference.

All heads besides the SuperKick 1 are made by Remo, by the way.

I like a very tight sound on the kick, which is why I stuck a pillow in mine.
So I guess coated toms is recommended more for low end kits?
Thanks btw!

Go for Aquarian Super Kick II on the bass batter.

Would Remo Pinstripe Fusion set work? Clear toms...
Planning on getting the Super Kick II, they seem to have a sweet muffled sound.

Remo PS4/PS4 with socks in the goalposts for your pedal.

the pinstripes are alright for playing on your own
in fact, they sound really nice.

however, live or in recordings, they just wont cut it i'm afraid. they dont ring out enough

ok, fair enough, depends on style of music i guess

snare + bass:
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Remo-Gig-Drumhead-Pack-With-Free-Ambassador-Snare-Side-Head?sku=490093 - $55

toms:
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Remo-Emperor-Tom-Drumhead-Pack?sku=490092 - £36.99 - go for the coated emperors.

OPTIONAL resos for toms:
i cant find a pack on there, but remo clear ambassadors all round

this is what i play with, and it sounds sweet live or recorded :)

edit: i've just realised you yanks can rehead your kits for under £50 :(

cost me nigh on £120 last time i did it...

Not that it makes that much of a difference, but I posted the wrong kit. http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Pulse-Pro-5Piece-Drum-Set-with-Cymbals?sku=444094
It's really that one^, but they're similar enough...
Anywho I am thinking of going clear ambassadors all around the toms, Superkick II on the bass, and this on my snare http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Evans-Genera-HD-Dry-Snare-Batter-Drumhead?sku=440249
Sound good?

Snare is my first priority, as my snare seems to have a lot of overtones. Not the best snare, but I am still sort of strapped.

go with emperors, esp. on those sizes :)

Clear, really dig the clear look? I think I would dig a more muffle sound, err decisions, decisions. Emperors for all the drums? or just the toms? Because my snare seems to have some bad overtones, hence the Genera HD Dry.

Do the sizes of the other kit and my kit make that much of a difference? All pretty standard from other kits, except for the kick drum being 16" depth. Although the other kit is smaller. Hm..

just the toms. though id say, try an ambassador on the snare first, and learn to tune the ring out :)

the sizes make a fair difference, yes.
the larger toms are deeper in tone, so need different tunings, and different heads :)

if you want to get rid of some overtones out of the snare try cranking up the tuning alot, theres no middle ground, its prretty much so high its choking the head, and you can get a pretty nice sound, at least i did...

its odd, i have my snare really high but my toms low, its a good combonation imo...

added bonus, i dont get any ring out of the snare when i hit my toms...

I cannot give you advice until you tell me the sound youre looking for?

I like a sort of fat warm sound, without overtones. I like the real muffled sound on the kick. Don't like the sound on Jazz kits. I'm more of a rock guy. I do like classic rock, but prefer the sound of modern drummers, like from the Used, Saosin, UnderOath, etc..

Really digging the Evans EC2 clear sound,

Go for a 2-ply head (Emperor, G2, Super-2 or Response 2). If youre looking for a sharper cutting attack to the tom sound, go clear skins, otherwise go coated for a slightly warmer, rounded sound.

Any decent kick head with built in muffling will do the job (Powersonic, Emad, Emad II, Superkick, Superkick II)

Tune all skins medium to low

EC2 or G2 batter with G1 reso.
EMAD or Superkick for kick drum.
St Dry or Emperor X batter snare. Snare side 300 Hazy for reso

Question: Do reso heads really make that big of a difference? I've been using the stock reso heads on my kit for years, and I'm curious if they'd sound better with some new heads...

They sing out more.

My reso heads (clear ambs) were on my set for almost 3 years, replaced them (and top heads too) and the sound is so much better!

you realllllly should change them, not just because stock heads are pretty much the lowest quality, but also because your resos wear out over time as well. even though they aren't struck directly, they're still being hit constantly by all that air.

I picked up some G2s for the top and G1s for the bottom. I got them on and gave them a sort of rough tuning.... Sound pretty decent, I just wish I was better at tuning...

Anybody know where I can get that resonant head? Thumbs up for who can identify it :D
