Steve, I wasn't just asking for a list of favorite bands. I was looking for suggestions of relatively unknown and obscure bands and thought this would generate some interesting discussion.
Surely almost everyone who's a die hard music fan has at least one band that they can't understand why they didn't catch on more?

are you serious? Everyone knows Maiden, duh. I hear them on the radio from time to time. They're underground, but probably one of the most popular underground bands I know of. Kind of like Slayer. It's cool though that you've heard of Lamb of God and Killswitch Engage. Its hard to find people that like the same kind of music that I do. Have you ever heard of Unearth? Yeah, they're pretty good too, but even more unknown than Killswitch.

Please tell me you're not being serious??? Every 14 year old Hot Topic metal kid knows who those bands are!!! Maybe because Lamb Of God Has Been around almost a decade, Killswitch has been ripped off my every metalcore band in the world doing the sing/scream thing. And Unearth?? Seriously just another metalcore band. Iron Maiden?? I'm not going to touch that one...and Slayer, if you listen to metal and don't know who Slayer is....just wow, take a long walk off a short bridge.

serious about what? Unearth is a good band, so what if they aren't as well known as Maiden.
I couple years ago my friends got me into band like Trivium and As I lay Dying, they're pretty underground (well, not Trivium anymore) but I got bored with their style. Besides KsE and LoG, I'd say my favorite underground not well-known band would probably be Thrice. (not metal, but tehy're gods)...or Devil Wears Prada (Tech Deth for the win!! dumb name though)

be like what, intelligent about music? Devil Wears Prada is great, they're almost as tech as Dream Theater, if not more at times. Dream Theater is easier to listen to because their singer sounds like he should be in the 80's. I don't understand why you guys are ripping on me about my taste, I probably know more bands at my high school than any other person. Seriously, how many people do you know that recognize the name "August Burns Red". But I guess if you guys know a lot, maybe you could suggest some stuff to me. I heard about a band called "Death", are they pretty good? My friend told me they sound like a heavier version of Atreyu.

Junius - A local band from Boston that has a sound I can get into really well. I got to see them a few times this past South by Southwest and enjoyed them quite a bit.
Homesick For Space - A mellow indy band that has some good moments of build up and intensity. They use a bit of piano which sounds nice, and I like the sound of the singers voice. My favorite song of theirs was off their demo though, its hasn't made it to any of their albums. I put it here for anyone interested. Starts out really mellow and builds up to a nice climax.
