Greetings R&Mers -- as outlined in the previous discussion thread (located here: http://www.sputnikmusic.com/forums/showthread.php?t=557006), a few regulars wanted to put together a list of R&M albums that are essential, genre-defining records.

Purpose: by compiling a list of primary genres, veterans and newcomers alike can reference this thread. For instance, say a user wants to get into Folk/Viking Metal - this thread will answer two things: 1) What is Folk/Viking Metal, and 2) What are some definitive records within the genre? This way, musical curiosity can be explored.

Guidelines

I. You are NOT expected to fill out every genre or fill up all five slots. If you are not "fluent" in a genre or multiple genres, please do not fill out those genres. The final project will have ten albums per genre, however.

II. The categories were compiled based on consensus from the aforementioned thread. You are more than welcome to add genres for consideration; however, the form below has proven to be relatively concrete.

III. Users will select up to five albums for each genre they wish to nominate. This forces users to legitimately consider which albums they truly believe are essential, definitive albums.

IV. The rankings are based on stratified strength: each #1-ranked album earns 15 points, #2 earns 12, #3 earns 8, #4 earns 5, and #5 earns 3. Rationale for stratification: this stems from a compromise; however, the premise is the same - the stratification enables users to really ponder which album best defines a particular genre. The break-up in points also will prevent ties.

V. Only one album per band per genre, and a band cannot appear in two or more genres! In this thread, it will be up to R&M participants to duke it out in pinpointing which genre best describes a certain band. For example, Opeth is considered progressive and death metal, but cannot appear in both lists. If the consensus is they should be considered progressive, Opeth will only be considered under the progressive genre.

VI. When totaling up the points, if multiple albums by the same artist appear in the list (for example, Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall appear at #2 and #10), they will together take the highest slot in the list (#2), and the #11 album will slide up to #10.

VII. This thread will serve as the discussion thread and will remain open throughout this project's existence. Use this thread to discuss, debate, post "rough draft" lists, "rough draft" genre descriptions, pick your collaborating partners for the genre descriptions, and the like. The "official" submission thread will appear in 2-3 days - once you formally submit your list, you will not have much time to edit your posts!

VIII. As a part of this project, I will need SHORT descriptions of the genres. GOAL: clear, concise description of the genre that unquestionably answers "What is [this genre] like?" Credit will be given to the user(s) who create/collaborate original descriptions. Copypasta Wikipedia is unacceptable! It can be anything - the tempo, the structure, the history, etc. - just make it good! I want to include these descriptions in the final list.

IX. Some basic rules that I insist that people help me out with:

- No multiple votes from multiple accounts (please narc on somebody if this happens)
- All are welcome, but unfamiliar posters will be eyed suspiciously
- Ask questions/debate/etc. in this thread if you need to!

X. This project is supposed to be fun, but I feel that I have to emphasize that mature disagreement with one's opinion is not personal. However, the R&M mods will be watching for unnecessary inflammatory posting.

If I am unclear/missing something, please tell me and I will fix this ASAP!

Reminders:

- You are not obligated to fill out all five spots or all the genres. If you can only think of three albums in a genre, just list those three.
- If you are unfamiliar with a genre(s), please abstain. For example, don't expect Jom submissions for doom, black, grind, drone/sludge, etc.
- Copy/paste this form into your post and work as a rough draft.
- Take your time! There is no deadline currently.

I am currently determining which genres I feel qualified to evaluate!

Obviously this will end up being all of them but internal deliberation is required to assure objectivity of the official results.

Reading Silenius's good list, a couple of questions; should we consider the first 3 Bathory albums black metal and the following 3 viking metal then? also, do you consider panzerfaust more important than transilvanian hunger or under a funeral moon?

Silenius
05-10-2008, 03:29 AM
Yes I consider the first three Bathory albums black metal, and the following ones viking. I feel personally that Darkthrone's sound and style is perfect on Panzerfaust which has always been my personal favorite and a great example of their basic style and blackened thrash roots. :)

What happens if a band like Darkthrone (who should obviously be under black metals top 5) gets a bunch of votes for different albums and is edged out, can we all agree that band should be in the top albums and just consent on an album?

Stevie II
05-10-2008, 03:53 AM
no, i think a lot of bands will have that problem - burzum, iron maiden, metallica, bathory, slayer, judas priest etc etc....so it's best to just go with whatever album we think. i suppose that's also what this thread is partly about - discussion...

about possessed - i'd put it under death metal as certainly that is where it is important and influential. i think possessed would make my top 10 death metal but i don't know about top 5.

Heh, mine and Apocalyptic raids' agree quite well.

I'm elated to see discussion and rough drafts already; that's real cool.

However, a quick reminder: bands can only show up for one genre only. This is an unfortunate trade-off in this project, as I realize that bands change genres over the course of their discography. Stevie is right - this thread can be used to help clarify where a band best falls because we're trying to get the best of the best for these genres.

You're right - these are essential, genre-defining albums, not your favorite albums... why would we do that if we've already done that already?

Jom
05-10-2008, 01:13 PM
Well, some personal bias is going to understandably percolate in some votes, but the aim of course is to compile a list of albums that best define the genres people are filling out. In some ways, it is based on personal taste (you are only picking the genre(s) you are most competent in), but it is indeed an exercise at attempting objectivity, haha.

The reason why it is not based solely on personal taste and more on "What albums best constitute [this genre]?" is because we have already done all-time favorite albums in R&M. Why re-invent the wheel? This is going to be something much more thorough because it's going to have genre descriptions, ten albums per genre, and so forth. The final product is going to look awesome, I can promise you guys that.

F. Power Metal

The offshoot of '80s speed metal, power metal came into its own as a mix of traditional heavy metal aesthetics with highly melodic guitar leads and ball-bursting falsettos. Whilst many would describe it as "swords and sorcerers" metal, this is an unfair summary of modern day power metal. From the balls-to-the-wall sound of genre heavyweights Manowar to the epic high fantasy content of Rhapsody of Fire's music, power metal contains something to please any metal fan; be it Sabaton's gritty presentation of modern history, Blind Guardian's tribute to Tolkien, Lost Horizon's belief in the power of oneself or Running Wild's rum-and-roll antics. Indeed, there seem to be only two rules in power metal: 1) Make it loud and make it powerful and 2) You will be huge in Japan.

1. Helloween - Keeper Of The Seven Keys Pt. I
2. Gamma Ray - Somewhere Out In Space
3. Dungeon - A Rise To Power
4. Lost Horizon - Awakening The World
5. Rhapsody - Symphony Of Enchanted Lands

This was a tough choice; I only dropped Therion's Theli at the last minute, since I felt Symphony Of Enchanted Lands is more definitive of epic/symphonic power metal, despite Theli being chronologically older.

It's a great album, but I don't really see what it did for power metal that hadn't been done before.

Good point, when I finalise my Traditional list I will swap out Manowar for another band/album.

Folk/Viking Metal

A blend of traditional melodies and metal, this folk and viking metal are heavily inspired by Northern European mythology and culture. Bathory was the first band to use this inspiration for their lyrics, aesthetics, and music on their album Blood Fire Death which was the birth of Viking Metal. Bands like Falkenbach have expanded on Bathory's original vision by changing up instrumentation to include flutes and acoustic guitars. These sections of traditional folk music are commonly used to contrast the black/heavy metal basis of most bands in the genre. Other bands like Amon Amarth purely rely on lyrics to convey their Viking themes, otherwise playing a solid Melodic Death Metal style. The use of clean vocals and large choir vocals is also common, such as Ensiferum's "Battle Song" chorus. The genre is wide musically, but it is unified by themes of bravery, paganism, battle, and nature.

1. Bathory - Blood Fire Death
2. Ensiferum - Ensiferum
3. Equilibrium - Turis Fratyr
4. Falkenbach - Ok Nefna Tysvar Ty
5. Amon Amarth - Fate of Norns

What is going to happen if a band shows up in two separate genres as having an album in the top ten? Like for example PF might have DSOTM for Prog. Rock, but may have PATGOD in Psychedelic. I've noticed throughout the thread they've been put under both genres, but which is the "correct" one since they were at one point Psychedelic and moved into progressive later?

Jom
05-11-2008, 09:06 PM
That's for the masses to debate, but I have an alternative in case things go awry. If people have suggestions, I would be more than happy to consider/implement them.

Riva
05-11-2008, 10:10 PM
I'd like to continue using Pink Floyd as an example;

You could pretty much highlight three broad stages in their sound; from psychadelic rock to progressive/space rock to a sort of quasi-classic mainstream rock. I may be a fairly large fanboy, but I would still objectively suggest that Piper At The Gates Of Dawn, Animals and The Wall were definitive or essential to their respective genres.

But I'll happily abide by the decision of my peers (except for Spat Out Homosexual, I hate that guy).

Jom
05-11-2008, 10:11 PM
I don't have a problem with that if it's the consensus, I just don't want Blackwater Park showing up under four genres or Metallica showing up in all fourteen.

they should though, you can't just ignore the fact that death metal now is pretty different than how death metal used to be, and those albums pretty much define that sound

The 'rule' has been modified to accommodate band evolution(s) in sound - there'll just be endnotes to the list to account for them. One example I was thinking of was something like:

Progressive Rock
1. Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon, The Wall*, Piper at the Gates of Dawn**

* - Mainstream Rock record
** - Psychedelic Rock record

In this example, DSOTM took the #1 spot across all votes, but I'll pull the other two records up along with DSOTM in the final list, although I'll have a note saying that they're not progressive rock.

The other alternative is simply ignoring that rule and letting bands show up in multiple genres. Again, I would have resented seeing a final project that has Metallica/Opeth/Tool/Mastodon/etc. in every ****ing genre.

submit lists to the new stickyd threads plz kk

Well, Iai's in particular was a rough draft and he said so himself... I'm hoping for final lists only in that final copy thread. This one's still open for debate, discussion, genre write-ups, etc.

Iai
05-13-2008, 11:26 AM
@ Spat: for me that's as much of a time-frame issue as anything. There's a buttload of crossover between the two anyway.

I'll totally do some of those genre write-ups tomorrow. What's done so far, if anything?

Nu-Metal

After the rampant mainstream success of Metallica, Vulgar Display of Power, and Superunknown (among others), America's music industry saw itself approaching the turn of the century with heavy metal as a serious commodity - its fanbase was no longer limited to outcasts now that a significant 'jock' contingent had begun attending Faith No More gigs. Nu-metal was the logical result; not for nothing was it once known as 'sports metal'. By scaling back metal's preoccupation with darkness and fantasy, and fusing it with hip-hop, electronica, funk, alternative rock, and a few of pop's more worldly quirks, bands like Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit, and Korn found a legion of fans who'd never normally go near a metal album ready to embrace them. It's become easy to scorn nu-metal with hindsight, but from 1999 to 2002, this music ruled the industry.

....like this?

Jom
05-13-2008, 12:32 PM
Absolutely perfect. The aim was to be concise, but if you feel too restrained by "concise," go absolutely nuts (just no dissertation-length write-ups, please :p).

dub sean: possibly? this idea originated in R&M, so depending on how successful (or how much of a flop) this is, it may percolate into the other genres as well. I know Hardcore/Emo has a list in their rules thread (I think... or maybe it has/had its own thread).

HighandDriving
05-13-2008, 12:34 PM
Iai, you sure about listing DFA as noise rock, pretty sure it's dance punk.
It's far too structured to fall under noise rock, also sorry for nit picking, just that really stood out to me.

Jom
05-13-2008, 12:38 PM
Uh, if we were going to include dance punk in an R&M forum, we would have to incorporate billions of other Wikipedia genres, and nobody would be arsed to read that. The immediate concession we made at the time is that some of the genre placements are going to be incredibly oil-and-water-mixing-esque, but for all intents and purposes (and intensive purposes!) Iai's placement (and knowledge base, considering what he's studied for years and has a job in) is absolutely cool with me.

EDIT: of course, if Iai wants to substantiate his claim that's more than awesome as well

Iai
05-13-2008, 12:48 PM
It's very tenuous, admittedly. I suppose I put it there for a similar reason that some people earlier in this thread included deathcore albums under death metal - it shows an evolution of the genre into more structured, rhythmically strict territory, as does Ex-Models. Other (alt/indie) genres fit it better, sure, but I don't think any of the ones on the list in this thread do. The Swans album is also debatable, since a lot of people reckon they weren't truly 'noise rock' by that point because they'd evolved too far into other areas. Then again, same's true of Daydream Nation, and there's no way that's not going to be included in a public vote.

The problem, also, is that there's a real lack of true noise rock albums that are actually any good.

Edit: Given how that deathcore/death metal argument I'll just replace it with a better fit. A better representation of what's important to the genre too.

I. You are NOT expected to fill out every genre or fill up all five slots. If you are not "fluent" in a genre or multiple genres, please do not fill out those genres. The final project will have ten albums per genre, however.is there going to some sort of filter for people who post lists despite their lack of knowledge or are we just going on some sort of honor system and under the assumption that they actually read the rules?

The people are supposed to be the filter. This is forum-driven, not individually-driven.

Jom this is why I'm scared of letting people pick this stuff... because they are doing genres that they have no idea about.

He has Battles under post-rock and CKY under alternative (#2!!!). Granted the votes will be overshadowed by a lot of other bands, but Jesus.

I guess it's hard getting people to read the guidelines.

What's the big problem with that?
I don't see Battles or CKY defining the genres listed whatsoever. I'm not saying they don't have hints of either genres, but I wouldn't even consider that either of each owns main genre or defining either genre.

E. Alternative (basically where I put everything that didn't have a category)
1. Weezer - Weezer (The Blue Album)
2. Brand New - Deja Entendu
3. Cursive - Domestica
4. The Fall Of Troy - Doppleganger
5.
This isn't a like a list on the main page, this is something that unless you are certain it is filed under a certain genre, that you should categorize it under it. I don't mean to come off harsh but that's the way it is and the guidelines that were set. If they don't fit, that means it's for a different discussion a different day.

Yeah but that isn't anything to get in a huff about. If what you're saying is really true, then no one else will vote for those albums and they won't get through anyway. That's the whole point. Ultimately we're trying to come to a consensus.

I understand what you're saying, but as soon as the voting is over, that's not going to be the final list. There is going to be a tentative final list, and people will appeal that tentative list. Once another round of discussion goes through, we will have the final list. No question, that appeal thread is going to have some good discussion (I hope)... and a few ELIMINATORs for good measure.

lol. Nah, truth is anything I do know about noise rock is stuff I've learnt from academic textbooks. Don't like the stuff. I just posted that list because it's Fat Nick's little darling genre and I knew he'd take the bait. That argument about DFA1979 comes from a argument I had with the singer of a local noise band, who also claimed that The Killers had a Krautrock influence.

Would Amorphis - Silent Waters and any Agalloch album be considered Progressive metal?
Also, The Red Paintings - Walls, The Pogues - Rum Sodomy and Lash and The Smiths - The Queen is Dead all just come under Alt. rock?

Iai

I'd say none of those last three albums qualify to be honest. If anything The Pogues should go under folk rock, but people will likely argue that just because it's Celtic rather than Appalachian folk, and when they hear the term 'folk rock' that's what they imagine.

Guys, I just made a genre write-up on two genres.
Please comment/help me out, since english is not my first language and all.

It hard to specify everyhing, since it's a big melting pot and some bands fit into multiple genres or developed over the years. But hey, I tried. :)

Doom Metal
Doom metal was born in the eighties and like almost any metal genre hugely inspired by Black Sabbath. The debate about Black Sabbath actually being doom metal or not still rages on to this day, but no matter your opinion, their influence on the doom genre has been enormous.
While doom metal has some of it's roots in blues music, the blues sound is dropped, but the blue note not.
The slow, pessimistic and heavy sound played by mostly downtuned guitars is a trademark. In the eighties the typical Black Sabbath sound was developed further by bands like Candlemass, Saint Vitus, Trouble and Pentagram, in the form of traditional doom.
In the nineties doom metal developed even further and combined it's sound with influences from almost any other metal genre and even took influences from outside the metal genre. This experimentation caused a huge diversity in bands within the doom metal genre. With doom subgenres as depressive black, doom/death, funeral doom, sludge, gothic doom, (ambient) drone doom and so on.

Drone, Classical and Stoner, Sludge metal
A big potpouri of genres thrown on a pile, it might seem.
But on closer inspection they're related.
The genres named in this category are influenced by or developed out of the already broad genre of doom metal.
Drone took the slow and heavy riffing of doom metal even further. With downtuned guitars and riffs hardly decipherable, this is a very extreme genre that is mainly the terrain of bands like EARTH, Boris and Sunn O))).
The stoner metal genre, also hugely influenced by Black Sabbath, took the blues aspect more into account. But not only the blues sound, also the psychedelic sound of Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and others were taken in. All in all this created a gerne of mellowed, laid back music, with a profound love for psychedelic and mariuhana induced excursions.
Main bands: Sleep, Bongzilla and Weedeater.
Sludge metal came to be as doom metal musicians starting adding agressive and abrasive hardcore influenced sounds to their compositions. Starting out with bands as Crowbar and Eyehategod, the genre developed over the years with bands as ISIS and Neurosis who added a more atmosperical and layered sound.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - this is certainly not my strong point, describing genres. So please if you want to criticize, completely rewrite or ridicule this then do so, and I will only hold bitter resentment towards you and nothing more.

Black metal

Black metal has its roots in thrash and heavy metal bands such as Venom, Bathory and Mercyful Fate in the 1980s who combined their respective genres with dark aesthetics and satanic imagery that drew inspiration for artists that would later define black metal as a separate genre.

Black metal grew within the early 1990s particularly in Scandinavia where bands created fast, sweeping, melodic and dark music accompanied by often blastbeat drumming and shrieking vocals (although this is not definitive of the genre) with a nihilistic, satanic or pagan pretext. Black metal aims to create a cold, harsh atmosphere reminiscent of winter, death and hatred. The philosophy is largely a revolt against the established Christian society, and embraces individualism, satanism, nature and in many cases national socialism. The stylings of black metal are wide ranging, from simple, raw black metal like Beherit and Darkthrone influenced by acts like Bathory and Sarcofago, to blasting, chaotic black metal like Dissection and Marduk, influenced by death metal and traditional heavy metal.

Whilst black metal is diverse in style it is all bound by the same basis, atmosphere and philosophy that defines black metal. Many have embraced the idea that black metal is about satanism exclusively, though differing views within black metal are present. A national socialist sentiment in black metal was part of black metal since bands like Burzum and Graveland started, though it was not until recently that bands emerged that were overtly national socialistic creating a sort of subgenre of black metal.

Pretty good man, you could add some stuff about NS BM since were talking about strong philosophical statements within the genre.
Maybe a tad bit more info on the aesthetics of the genre?

Also the harsh shrieked vocals which form a distinctive trademark could be mentioned and maybe the production values. Although that has become less relevant over the years.

/Awaits bitter resentment.

Death Metal

In the constant quest amongst metal in the 1980s to create the most extreme music known to man death metal was born from a variety of bands in the late 1980s such as Possessed, Morbid Angel and Sepultura who progressed from thrash metal, and created death metal, which abandoned melody and instead embraced dissonant, seemingly disjoint music with distorted vocals. Death metal is as the name would suggest morbid and in doing so embraces and finds meaning of death in life and communicates this morbidity through symbolic lyrics and imagery, whether it be through lyrics devoted to gore or war.

[I feel there's more to add here but I've hit "writer's block" so to speak]

Stevie, just to let you know you can't "drew inspiration to". The act of drawing (in this case) implies bring something from a remote place towards yourself, so you would have to say that other bands "drew inspiration from them".

Jam Band
The Jam Band genre is incredibly vast and diverse. There is no criteria for what the music has to sound like. It is based extensively around improvisation. Often at these kinds of concerts there will be "jams" that can last anywhere from 5 minutes, to over an hour. Four of arguably the most popular Jam bands all have different musical stylings, ranging from Bluegrass to Alternative rock.

Since the cornerstone of Jam Bands is improv., tapes live performances are how most bands gain popularity. Fans will often travel around the country with a single group for years on end. The idea behind this being if you go to an Umphrey's McGee concert on Saturday, what you see on Sunday night will most likely be completely different. Live taping is also very prominent, most bands will allow (encourage to a point) fans to bring in their own microphones and equipment to tape the audio of shows and distribute freely amongst each other. Such website as www.archive.org and bt.etree.org are hosts to these many recordings.

One last thing that is worth mentioning is the recreational drug use present in the Jam Band Community. It is not uncommon (almost likely) to see fans ingest very small tabs of paper or have marijuana cigarettes pressed between their lips. Just by standing in line to get into a venue you will get bombarded by waves of people walking around with an index finger above their head and a big baggies in their jeans. As a friend of mine once said, you know you're into jam bands when you recognize "doseshroomsbud" as both a statement, and a question.

I don't really know what else to add/take of this, any suggestions are welcome.

Black metal

Black metal has its roots in thrash and heavy metal bands such as Venom, Bathory and Celtic Frost in the early 1980s who combined their respective genres with dark aesthetics and satanic imagery that would be inspiration for artists that would later define black metal as a separate genre. Many fans refer to these bands as part of the 'first wave' of black metal.

The 'second wave' of black metal grew within the early 1990s particularly in Scandinavia where bands created fast, sweeping, melodic and dark music accompanied by often blastbeat drumming and shrieking vocals (although this is not definitive of the genre) with a nihilistic, satanic or pagan pretext. Black metal aims to create a cold, harsh atmosphere reminiscent of winter, death and hatred. The philosophy is largely a revolt against the established Christian society, and embraces individualism, satanism, misanthropy, nature and in many cases national socialism. Black metal has a wide range of styles, from simple, raw black metal such as Beherit and Darkthrone, who drew influence from acts like Bathory and Sarcofago, to blasting, chaotic black metal like Dissection and Marduk, influenced also by death metal and traditional heavy metal.

The diverse styles of black metal are bound by the same basis, atmosphere and philosophy that defines black metal. Many have embraced the idea that black metal is about satanism exclusively, though differing views within black metal are present. A national socialist sentiment in black metal was part of black metal amongst some of the 'second wave' of black metal with bands like Burzum and Graveland, though it was not until recently that bands emerged that were overtly national socialistic.

Pop Rock/Powerpop/Glam Rock

As the 1970s dawned, popular music had exploded into adulthood following the rapid growth spurt of psychedelia, and sales were at an all-time high thanks to the ever-increasing presence of pop on the radio and television, and a rapidly expanding adult audience. The more cynical out there might claim that glam rock, power pop, and New Wave were no more than the attempts of major record labels to cash in on the rock trend by repackaging it for kids and girls, but culturally and musically, the importance of several of the artists involved cannot be understated. David Bowie struck a major blow for artists everywhere by claiming to be gay and reinventing himself as an androgynous alien; Marc Bolan's transition from hippie strum to glam stomp made him one of the first real cult heroes in rock; Elvis Costello's nerdy glasses and pop nous were instrumental in helping punk and all its less antisocial offshoots survive throughout the '80s. At its best, pop rock offers the listener unforgettable hooks served with just enough subversion to avoid being vacuous, as the murder ballad "Alison", the ode to heroin "Another Girl, Another Planet", and the deliriously gay "Jey Boy Jet Girl" - classics one and all - will attest.

Metalcore

Fusing together the raw intensity of Hardcore with the technical prowess and aggression of metal, Metalcore bore rise to many underground bands throughout the 1990's. Key characteristics to the genre being a mix of melodic passages, at times complex musicianship and the most recognisable feature: the breakdown.

Bands like Botch, Converge, Poison The Well and 7 Angels 7 Plagues helped pioneer and popularize the genre each releasing acclaimed albums such as We Are The Romans, Jane Doe, The Opposite of December and Jhazmyne's Lullaby.

These artists along with other external influences such as Melodic Death Metal helped influence a more commercially popular 2nd wave of bands in the 21st Century, such as Killswitch Engage, As I Lay Dying and Parkway Drive.

EDIT : Meh criticise if you like but I'm shattered and a bit drunk

Shadius
05-20-2008, 05:32 PM
Meh, these lists are gay. Artists who fit cleanly into genres will automatically be over-represented.

I mean, "Traditional Heavy Metal" is set up for bands like Maiden and Sabbath while classic rock automatically recalls Zeppelin and AC/DC, you know what I mean?

To pick a examples everyone will know, where does Green Day fit? Pop punk? Mainstream Rock? Both, equally really, depending upon the album maybe. Pink Floyd, classic? progressive?

ISIS? If they end up in the post-metal rather than the sludge metal they end up with bands like Sigur Ros and Godspeed, and even Talk Talk. Who they share almost no simularities.

What about melodic death metal bands? Then those albums that sort of defy genres or fit loads simulataniously. Without mentioning bands like Radiohead.

Also, singer-songwriters? I was wondering where to fit Bowie, or Buckley, or whatever, who argueably belong in rock music.. somewhere, though might not represent genre x to the fullest degree.

Maybe a list of iconic albums should be constructed, and they could be put in genres by a team of experts who can tag them in various genres rather than all the confusion with putting them in a single genre.

Jom

Stevie II
05-21-2008, 03:53 AM
Exactly - this is a startingpoint for genres so 'cross genres' bands are not very relevant. Also this list doesn't account for influential bands - eg I haven't seen Celtic Frost there despite their importance, but really Celtic Frost's material isn't amongst the top 5 for any genre, really.

Shadius
05-21-2008, 06:19 AM
Sticking to these genres means the list misses out on most of my favourite music. Or, means people arn't sure which genre to put music into because theres so many crossovers. Few bands fit into just one of these genres.

And influentiality would be better represented by a decade by decade (or less) scale, too. The first bands to start a genre, how movement progressed and moved to other areas, thats more important than pigeon-hole'ing.

there's a limit to where this list can go or else it's just going to get bigger and bigger. this is not a favorites list. if i want to get into doom metal this list shows me where to start and it's up to me whether i go deeper into it and this list is not a matter of spoon feeding you exactly where to go.

Bump for a question.

Let's say, for the sake of example, tr00gr1imblackmetulz has two albums: Frozen in Shadows (voted ten times, but at #4 or #5 usually) and Slain Archangel (voted five times, but always #1). Which album should be placed on the official list? The 'losing' album would, of course, be in the endnotes for the genre in the final list.

My inclination at first was to say that the album with more votes should get the nod over the fewer-voted album, but now I'm not real sure. What would you all suggest?

By the way, in case any of you are wondering about the status of the list, I am still shooting for a midweek publication (the appeal thread). Official publication will go up after the appeals :)

I think this is going to look pretty good. Hopefully the appeal thread will garner more interest, too.

----------

New question:

Say, again, for the sake of example, there's a band called rock+roll=life and they have two albums, A and B. A received 27 votes and B received 14. Should I factor in "B-points" somehow to accommodate those voters who voted for the same band, just a different album, or should I strictly go black-and-white with the votes, and just put B in the genre endnotes?

UmphreysHead
05-25-2008, 11:21 PM
Maybe we could do a separate thread for just ties or like you stated in the first one. Unless you think this is just going to wind up being to much unnecessary work.

Jom
05-25-2008, 11:34 PM
The work isn't an issue at all - I want this to look good, this is something people can look at and be like, "Yeah, I was a part of this, the final product looks cool."

Let me give a more specific example, for you doom people:

For Candlemass, I received six first place votes for Epicus Doomicus Metallicus.

For Nightfall, I received ten votes, scattered from 1-4.

Which album should take precedence, a six-strong consensus #1, or the scattered ten?

-------------

Fun Fact/Spoiler for Progressive Metal:

Still Life beat out Blackwater Park 12-10 in voting, with a score of 144-117. I was surprised to see this.

pate
05-26-2008, 02:06 PM
I think total points should be more important than number of votes, so Epicus would beat Nightfall because of the six #1s.

I think The 'B-Points' should be added to the A-Points, and then album A would be the one on the final list.
