I used to play it heel down but then I heard heel up was better, so I tried to switch.

I was sitting there tapping and went "hmm, everyone else seems to tap different to me"

I play heel down for all my double bass chops and all grooves except for just straight double bass singles. For any pattern with more than 5 singles in succession I raise my heel.

Heel down always felt more natural for me, except when doing doubles, which i inexplicably need to be heel up to do properly

I've always played heel-down. Heel-up just doesn't do it for me.

It's pretty important to practice both, especially once you start doing accented strokes with your feet in straight double bass grooves. Tough to use dynamics if you are already pounding your hardest with heel up all the time.

I don't really use double bass but I'm comfortable with either heel up or down.

More sounds at your disposal that way :)

Have you seen any of Thomas Lang's DVD's by any chance?

You download the iso and rip it onto a DVD, has the menu and everything.

I find Heel-down feels wrong.

I find Heel-down feels wrong.

i agree, thats why i think heel-down is probably the more proper way to do it.

i play heels-up btw, and im not a drummer.

i always play heel up because i just can't get enough power with my left foot unless i do.

i used to practice heel down when i first started playing dbl bass, but i haven't practiced it in a while. i did have great control heel down, just didn't have the speed and power.

eventually i want to be able to play both equally well. i plan on working on dbl bass extensively over the summer.

Bit of both. If your doing straight 16ths heel down gets a bit strenuous, for example. It depends on the situation.

After a while you get used to it. Although a bad side effect is your calf muscle grow into giant hams :(
