Hey guys,
I need a new drumset. I consider myself an intermediate drummer. I have been playing for about 5 years and have decent chops, so I don't want to go for a beginnger drumset. 5 piece is preferable. I am looking to spend up to $700. i am also willing to try anything -- I am not looking for any particular brand, but I love Pearl Eliminator double pedals. lol. Maybe a Pearl kit.......
But then again, I heard that Pearl drums are sorta overpriced.
Is this true?
Any particular kit someone could recommend?
Anyways, any help is appreciated.

Yeah, Pearl drums are quite overpriced. If you are going for most bang for your buck stay away from Tama and Pearl but look into Sonor Force 3005 or Mapex Pro M/M Birch kits. On second thought they may be more than $700, but still worth checking out nonetheless.

$700 is pretty limiting if you are looking for something that is cheap and decent quality. I would consider spending at least $1200. Then you could easily get Pro M's which are maple and sound great for the price.

an entry level Pearl kit is like $700ish. Forum Series. I have one, garbage drums, I'm ust to cheap to bu a new kit. Had it for 5 years... as shitty as it is it gets the job done.

Try looking at the ddrum duo, I think it's a little more than $700 but it's maple shells and it's a 6 piece I think so you get a little more tom action and they are beautiful IMO

just wondering, are you looking for a complete kit? or at this point do you thin kyou know enough about drums to maybe buy seperate pieces and make your own kit? just wondering personally.

anyway, there are some mapex kits for around 800 on MF, but they say they are discountinued. I remember seeing the sickest Birch Mapex kit a few months back for around $1200. I know thats more than you are looking to spend, but i meanb, if you are gona get a new kit, you might as well spend some extra and get something you can have for a long long time.

and mapex seems to be a really sturdy brand (from what ive heard and played) and fairly inexpensive compared to other brands of the same price.

Yeah, I wanna get a complete kit. I guess I could spend up to $1100, but it would take more time to save up the money.
I've heard guys on here recommend Mapex drums the most.
What are your opinions on Yamaha drumsets? Any particular yamaha sets that are good?
If no one can recommend Yamaha, then I will really look into Mapex as well as other kits.

I like the Yamaha Stage Custom Nouveau. My buddy has one, I just recorded his band in the studio, and it sounds great. I think they come with hardware as well. Not sure on the price, I think he payed $1200 CDN for it.

Word.

As much as I know there are so many other alternatives out there, I love TAMA drums too much to let them go, so I'm going to advise you too look for a oldish (still in good nick though obviously) TAMA kit. You'll be able to get one for $700 I'd say. Look at some Superstars.

I also agree with motley guy. Yammies are fantastic kits. great sound for the price

Mapex or Yammie, leaning towards Mapex imo. The M Birch is an amazing kit, quite frankly. Can't go wrong with the Yammie or a used Tama (imo, Tama's a little overpriced in your price range).

sigh, I picked up my Sonor 2001 set back in 04 for $650, great set. But the cost of everything has gone up since then! (hell, the new 1007 is even more expensive than the 2001, and I think the 2001s were still better).

Yup. 100x drums are beginner, 200x are intermediate/high-beginner (depends if you look at just the drums or also hardware and such).

On the contrary, $700 can get you a new 6 piece Gretsch Catalina Maple. Plus if you order it at massmusic.net you can get a $100 gift card with it as well. Best deal you can get for a new (and great!) kit IMO.

$700 is pretty tight as far as budgets for intermediate kits go. like im sure these guys said (im not reading all these posts), you should be able to pick up a pro-m or maybe a dated sonor 3005/2005 for around $700. maybe look at a gretsch catalina birch. ebay is your friend.

if you're looking to upgrade i would highly suggest NOT getting a pearl forum, as that is bottom of the line. It may not be as bad as it gets, but its down there.

Check out the mapex M Birch. They're great kits, and they're fairly cheap.
