Following on from discussion in the suggestions/problems thread, this is an idea to have a sticky thread listing a top 10 most essential from a variety of genres. I didn't expect so many genres, but there's no harm in doing more genres. So these are the genres I'd do:
Black Metal - Stevie
Death Metal - Stevie
Traditional metal - pate
Grind
Thrash Metal - FatalEnergy
Doom Metal - the2stranger
Power Metal - pate
Metalcore - dinosaurxbrocore
Progressive Metal
Folk/Viking Metal
Traditional Rock
Classic Rock
Hard rock
Grunge
Jam - UmphreysHead
Any more?
What I think we should do is you guys perhaps take a genre or two each, and that'd be your responsibility to do. What I'd do is within the respective threads open up for a week any nominations, max 10 per user then collect them together and open up for a week of voting, where people select the 10 from the list they believe is essential. Or, if no thread exists create one for the genre for nominations/voting. I wouldn't have any ranking to the votes as I think it'd be a tedious task to think whether one album is more essential than another - they're both essential!...
As regards to which band belongs to which genre, I don't think it's too important if one band goes across two lists, but what's important should perhaps be where they're most influential. For example, Opeth is more important in progressive metal than in death metal. Or perhaps we could take the band as the genre on metal archives for metal and idk for other genres....
So perhaps a week of voting and then it should be all done, i.e. everything could be done within 2 weeks. Maybe if nobody volunteers for a genre listed then it won't happen, or it could be done at another time and added to the thread.
If you guys agree then we could start nominating tomorrow for a week, ending Wed 14th and then from thurs 15th a week of voting.
Any more volunteers then to handle genres?
I am quite happy to start nominations today so I'll do that for myself now....
